World Trade Center Oculus to host 10 days of events for 10th anniversary

The World Trade Center Oculus will mark its 10th anniversary next month with 10 straight days of celebrations honoring the architectural landmark. Running from Friday, August 7 through Monday, August 17, festivities at the Lower Manhattan transit hub will include the unveiling of a new floral sculpture, giveaways, live music, artwork created on-site, and other free offerings open to the public. The event series kicks off with an exclusive rededication ceremony and the unveiling of the 10-foot “TEN IN BLOOM” floral installation, designed by world-renowned floral design company Fleurs de Villes.

World Trade Center to host free watch parties for Yankees-Mets series

It's a big weekend for New York baseball fans. The first Subway Series of the season kicks off on Friday, with the Yankees and Mets facing off as part of Major League Baseball's inaugural "Rivalry Weekend." With both teams currently taking the top spot in their division, and Juan Soto returning to the Bronx for the first time since signing with the crosstown foe for $765 million, the games promise to be can't-miss television. To revel in the rivalry, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will broadcast all three games on giant screens (with sound) at the North Oculus Plaza on the World Trade Center campus.

A festive roller rink is opening inside the Oculus

A roller rink is opening inside the World Trade Center's Oculus this month. "Winter Whirl" invites skaters of all ages to skate inside the Lower Manhattan shopping mall and underneath the architecturally stunning skylight designed by Santiago Calatrava. The rink will open for the season on Friday, November 24, and operate through late January.

WTC Oculus skylight won’t open this year during 9/11 commemoration due to leak

The skylight atop the $3.9 billion World Trade Center Transportation Hub Oculus won't open this year on September 11, according to the Port Authority. It was announced this week that the skylight–comprised of 224 panes of glass on 40 motorized panels designed by Spanish starchitect Santiago Calatrava–has a leaking problem and will remain closed for this year's anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. The skylight was intended to open and close, releasing a beam of light into the Oculus space at precisely 10:28 A.M. each year to mark the moment the north tower of the World Trade Center fell.

Leaking skylight of World Trade Center’s Oculus may not be fixed for 9/11 anniversary

Since 2016, the skylight of the World Trade Center's Oculus has reopened on each anniversary of September 11 as part of the "Way of Light" ceremony. But the annual event may not happen this year. The skylight, which has been leaking since last fall, may not be repaired in time for this year's anniversary, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday.

The $32M skylight of the World Trade Center’s Oculus is leaking

A rubber seal that runs along the middle of the retractable skylight of the World Trade Center's Oculus has ripped, causing leakage, the Wall Street Journal reported Sunday. The tear may have stemmed from the reopening of the skylight during last year's anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks, according to the Port Authority, which owns the World Trade Center site.

The retractable skylight at the World Trade Center Oculus will reopen on 9/11

The skylight at the World Trade Center Oculus will reopen on September 11 at exactly 10:28 a.m., the same time the North Tower fell in 2001. The "Way of Light," which happens every year on 9/11, will shine through the opening, bringing light to the bustling WTC transit center below. Santiago Calatrava designed the Oculus oriented in a way that allows sunlight to cross the floor, directly along the axis of the building.

Confirmed: Calatrava’s WTC Transportation Hub Will Open First Week of March!

The Port Authority has announced today in a press release that the World Trade Center Transportation Hub—anchored by architect Santiago Calatrava's Oculus–will open the first week of March. The hub will link the World Trade Center PATH station and "enable travelers to have a seamless connection with 11 New York City subway lines and the East River ferries in addition to access to PATH trains."
