Stylish Felt Ottoman Takes Inspiration From Elizabethan Era Neck Ruffles

December 1, 2015

As the weather gets colder and the days get darker, you’re probably seeking out soft, fuzzy materials to snuggle up with in your New York apartment. One new item we would definitely like to get cozy with is Romero Vallejo‘s Ruff Pouf. This contemporary ottoman is crowned with an ingenious folded felt structure inspired by neck ruffles worn by men and women during the Elizabethan era.

Architects Sara Romero and Mariano Vallejo are the founders of Madrid-based studio Romero Vallejo. They work with a multidisciplinary approach, developing both small and big scale projects in close collaboration with artisans.

The felted seats, which can also be used as a low table, are made from an expanded polystyrene and foam rubber core wrapped in a soft new wool (felt). The sturdy central drum is surrounded by a ruffled skirt of the same material, which gives the seat a subtle sculptural elegance, and provides a modern twist on the traditional Elizabethan fashion.

The wavy geometry is enhanced by a contrast of colors, which combines the tones of the inner layers (beige and purple for the high version, gray and yellow for the low ottoman) with the outer gray felt.
