PATH to get major service boost, but fare will reach $4 by 2029

For the first time in 25 years, all PATH lines will operate seven days a week, one of the largest service increases in its history. To help pay for the system improvements, fares are expected to rise to $4 by 2029. On Thursday, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey released its proposed $45 billion 2026–2035 Capital Plan, which outlines major service upgrades between Manhattan and New Jersey. Improvements include eliminating transfers between Hoboken and the World Trade Center by mid-2026 and increasing weekend service. To fund the plan, the agency is proposing a 33 percent fare increase from the current $3 base fare, rising in 25-cent increments starting next summer and reaching $4 in 2029.

Across New York City’s five boroughs, office space occupies 730 million square feet (600 million of which is in Manhattan), according to CoStar data obtained by New York City Comptroller Brad Lander. This is the most of any North American city; runner-up Los Angeles has only 432 million square feet of office space. So, it’s no wonder that the conversation around post-Covid commercial real estate vacancies is such a hot-button issue, especially considering that Manhattan’s residential vacancy rate is just 1.2 percent.

Adams to designate Elizabeth Street Garden as official NYC park to block housing project

To prevent Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani from turning Nolita's Elizabeth Street Garden into senior housing as first intended over a decade ago, Mayor Eric Adams is designating the one-acre green space as official city parkland. As first reported by Gothamist, Adams is transferring ownership of the lot to the Parks Department, which would require any development on the site to be approved by the state legislature. The move comes less than two months before Mamdani, who said he would build affordable housing at the site, takes office.

The historic 1873 townhouse is known as much for its famous past residents as for its narrow size. NYC to install seating at nearly 9K bus stops over the next decade

More New Yorkers will soon have a place to sit while waiting for the bus, as the city expands seating at nearly 9,000 bus stops. On Thursday, Mayor Eric Adams and Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez announced a $40 million investment to install benches at roughly 8,750 bus stops across the city that currently lack seating. Starting in November, the city will add benches at about 875 stops per year for the next decade, offering seating at a vastly larger number of bus stops citywide.

The City Council on Thursday unanimously approved a plan to transform the Bronx’s long-vacant Kingsbridge Armory into a mixed-use community hub with roughly 500 affordable homes. Led by the city’s Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), the El Centro Kingsbridge project will convert the historic armory into a vibrant facility featuring an event venue, recreation center, sports fields, and a public plaza, with a new affordable housing building next door. The approval marks a major milestone for the long-stalled site, following two failed redevelopment attempts that collapsed amid community opposition.

This year’s Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree hails from upstate NY

The towering spruce that will serve as this year’s Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree, standing at the heart of New York City's holiday celebrations, has been revealed. Found upstate in East Greenbush, the 75-foot-tall tree will be cut down on Thursday, November 6, and make its journey to Manhattan, arriving on Saturday, November 8. After it’s adorned with tens of thousands of twinkling lights and crowned with its iconic Swarovski star, the annual tree lighting ceremony will take place on Wednesday, December 3.

JPMorganChase’s massive Midtown East headquarters, the tallest all-electric skyscraper in New York City, is now open. Designed by Norman Foster's Foster + Partners, the 1,400-foot-tall building at 270 Park Avenue can accommodate 10,000 employees across 2.5 million square feet of workspace. Rising 60 stories, the $3 billion skyscraper features a striking “fan-column” design that rises about 80 feet above street level and provides 2.5 times more outdoor space than its predecessor.

A housing lottery has launched for 60 mixed-income apartments in a new 24-story tower in the East Village. The East, located at 644 East 14th Street, offers 196 studio to two-bedroom apartments and luxury amenities, including a roof deck with East River views. New Yorkers earning 70 and 130 percent of the area median income can apply for the units, priced from $1,777/month studios to $4,315/month two bedrooms.

MTA unveils tribute to late Zabar’s owner at 79th Street subway station

The subway station at 79th Street now honors an Upper West Side icon. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority unveiled a tribute to Saul Zabar, the owner of the famed Zabar's deli, who passed away last week at the age of 97. The agency has put up vinyl posters of Zabar in his signature white coat along the 1 train platform. The deli recently collaborated with the MTA to celebrate the subway’s 120th anniversary and Zabar’s 90th birthday.

A plan to redevelop 122 acres of Brooklyn’s industrial waterfront—adding thousands of apartments and a modern port—just cleared a major hurdle. A task force overseeing the $3.5 billion redevelopment of the Brooklyn Marine Terminal on Monday voted to advance the project, which includes a 60-acre all-electric port, 6,000 new apartments, and 28 acres of open space from Cobble Hill to Red Hook. The vote followed five previous postponements and comes just before the deadline to secure city and federal funding, according to The City.

Five-alarm fire destroys 150-year-old Red Hook artist warehouse

A 19th-century warehouse in Red Hook that has been a hub for artists for decades was engulfed in a five-alarm fire last week. Located at 481 Van Brunt Street, the four-story wood-framed warehouse contained dozens of studios and design businesses, as well as the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (BWAC). According to the New York Times, the fire broke out shortly before midnight on Wednesday and escalated quickly, drawing more than 250 firefighters who battled the flames into the night.

Flatbush Avenue redesign to begin this fall

Flatbush Avenue is getting faster (and safer). Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez on Friday announced work will begin this fall on center-running bus lanes along the busy Brooklyn corridor, from Livingston Street to Grand Army Plaza. The overhaul aims to speed up trips for 132,000 daily riders, where buses now average less than 4 miles per hour. Slated for completion in 2026, the project also includes pedestrian islands with covered seating, shorter crossing times, and updated curb regulations to support local businesses.
