City Council approves Related’s Hudson Yards West plan for 4,000 apartments and no casino
The New York City Council on Wednesday voted to approve zoning changes to allow for thousands of new apartments, but not a casino, on the undeveloped section of Hudson Yards. Related Companies' Hudson Yards West proposal includes four mixed-use towers, nearly seven acres of public green space, and 4,000 apartments. The original plan called for a casino run by Wynn Resorts, but Related scratched the gaming facility from the project last month amid strong opposition from community members and officials.

Eataly opens new grab-and-go market and cafe in Hudson Yards
The Hudson Yards outpost of Italian marketplace Eataly has officially opened its doors. Located on the fourth level of the Shops & Restaurants at 20 Hudson Yards, Eataly Caffè marks the brand’s fourth New York City location and introduces a new concept featuring a coffee counter, grab-and-go options, and quick-service items ranging from pastries and sandwiches to gelato. The 5,500-square-foot, 82-seat space also includes a location-exclusive wine bar offering a variety of Italian wines, cocktails, and shareable plates.

Related drops casino from Hudson Yards plan, but keeps proposal for 4,000 new homes
Related Companies is dropping the casino from its project proposed for the undeveloped section of Hudson Yards, the developer announced Monday. In partnership with Wynn Resorts, Related previously pitched a $12 billion mixed-use development anchored by a casino, dubbed "Hudson Yards West," as part of its bid for one of the state's three downstate gaming licenses. Due to opposition from the community and local elected officials, Related and Wynn announced they would no longer pursue a gaming license. However, the developer plans to move forward with a plan to build 4,000 apartments, nearly 50 percent of which will be affordable under a tentative agreement with the Adams administration.

Related modifies Hudson Yards casino proposal to include 4,000 housing units
Related Companies is more than doubling the number of housing units in its $12 billion Hudson Yards casino proposal ahead of an important City Council vote. After feedback from the community, the developer announced plans to replace a 1,400-foot-tall office tower with two residential buildings, which would increase the projected housing from 1,500 units to 4,000 total units on the site. As reported by Crain's, the change seeks to address critics of Related's efforts to modify the terms of a 2009 rezoning, which originally called for over 5,000 new homes on the site.

City Planning Commission advances $12B Hudson Yards casino plan
A $12 billion proposal to bring a casino complex to Hudson Yards just cleared a key step in the approval process. On Wednesday, the City Planning Commission (CPC) voted 9-2 to advance Related Companies and Wynn Resorts' "Hudson Yards West" plan, which calls for a resort and casino, a 5.6-acre public park, a public school, office space, and hundreds of new affordable homes atop the site’s undeveloped western rail yards. The proposal seeks to amend a 2009 plan that envisioned a primarily residential neighborhood with more than 5,000 new homes—a figure that has since been reduced to just over 1,500.

‘Snowscape’ will turn Hudson Yards’ Edge into a winter wonderland with real snow
No matter the temperature in New York City, there will be snow. Hudson Yards next month will unveil "Snowscape," a new experience that will make it snow at Edge, the city's highest outdoor sky deck. Starting December 2, snow will fall at the observation deck from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. On Sundays, guests can pose with an installation of real snow and snowmen.

Resurrected avant-garde art carnival Luna Luna opens this month at The Shed at Hudson Yards
Luna Luna: Forgotten Fantasy, the world’s first art amusement park, is coming to The Shed at Hudson Yards this month. Vessel at Hudson Yards reopens after three years
Three years after closing due to a series of suicides, Hudson Yards' Vessel reopened this week with new safety features. The 150-foot-tall climbable public artwork reopened on Monday with floor-to-ceiling, cut-proof, and water-resistant steel mesh barriers enclosing its stairways and platforms, while its top level is closed to the public, as reported by Gothamist. While it was initially free to climb, Vessel general admission costs $10, with free entry offered to NYC residents every Thursday.

New renderings show what $12B Hudson Yards casino proposal would look like from the High Line
Related Companies and Wynn Resorts released new renderings of their $12 billion proposal to build a huge mixed-use development anchored by a casino on the western, undeveloped portion of Hudson Yards. The images show how the "Hudson Yards West" proposal, which includes a resort and casino, a 5.6-acre public park, 1,500 new homes, a public school, and office space, would potentially impact the surrounding neighborhood, including the High Line. Supporters of the elevated park concerned the new development would affect the High Line's sightlines and sunlight have launched a campaign against the project.

Eataly's fourth New York City outpost is coming to Hudson Yards next year. The beloved Italian marketplace on Wednesday announced it will continue its Big Apple expansion by opening its fourth Manhattan store in the Shops and Restaurants at Hudson Yards in spring 2025. The company currently operates 12 North American locations and over 50 stores worldwide.

Rising 46 stories at 550 Tenth Avenue, the Maybury offers 453 residences with incredible views and 20,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor amenities, including a rooftop sky lounge. Sky-high yoga classes return to Hudson Yards’ 100th-floor observation deck Edge
Elevate your yoga skills to a new level of serenity with the New York City skyline as your backdrop. Starting next month, the "Sky-High Yoga" classes return to Edge, the 100th-floor sky deck at 30 Hudson Yards. This year, classes will be offered three days a week starting May 21. Tickets cost $75 and go on sale this Friday. Future ticket dates will be released on the first Friday of every month.

Vessel at Hudson Yards to reopen this year
The climbable structure at the center of Hudson Yards will reopen later this year. Vessel, an interactive public artwork, first opened in 2019 along with the mega-development but closed in 2021 after several people died by suicide there. Three years later, the structure will reopen to the public but with new barriers in place, as CBS New York first reported.

$12B Hudson Yards casino proposal details three skyscrapers, 1,500 apartments, a hotel, and offices
What could a casino look like in Hudson Yards? Related Companies this week filed plans with the city detailing a massive $12 billion development on the undeveloped western portion of Hudson Yards. As first spotted by Crain's, the proposal calls for the construction of three skyscrapers, including an 80-story residential building with 1,500 apartments, an office tower with roughly 2.2 million square feet of office space, and a gaming facility and hotel resort with 1,750 rooms run by Wynn Resorts. Related is one of the latest developers to unveil plans as part of a bid for one of the three downstate casino licenses to be awarded in the coming months.

Bjarke Ingels’ terrace-wrapped office tower The Spiral opens in Hudson Yards
It's BIG's biggest yet. Bjarke Ingels Group on Tuesday announced the completion of The Spiral, a 66-story office tower in Hudson Yards. The skyscraper at 66 Hudson Boulevard measures 2.8 million square feet and rises just over 1,031 feet tall, making it the architecture firm's first completed supertall. In addition to its soaring height, The Spiral stands out for its series of cascading terraces that wrap around the building, "like a 1,000-foot-tall vine at the scale of the city's skyline," as the architect described.

6 injured after crane collapses in Hudson Yards
Four civilians and two firefighters sustained minor injuries on Wednesday morning when a construction crane on the border of Hudson Yards and Hell's Kitchen caught fire and partially collapsed onto Tenth Avenue. The fire occurred 45 stories above the construction site at 550 Tenth Avenue at roughly 7:25 a.m. when the engine compartment of the crane caught fire. The fire gradually weakened the crane's cable and sent 16 tons of concrete and the crane's boom plummeting to the ground, causing damage to 555 Tenth Avenue on its descent, according to the fire department.

Russ & Daughters opens new location in Hudson Yards
The 110-year-old Lower East Side icon Russ & Daughters officially opened a new location in Hudson Yards this week. Located on the ground floor of the skyscraper 50 Hudson Yards at 34th Street and 10th Avenue, the 4,500-square-foot shop sells its signature Jewish specialties like smoked fish, bagels, bialys, and babka and offers seat-yourself dining and soon-to-open caviar and champagne bar.

A suspended spherical concert hall will hang in The Shed at Hudson Yards
A 65-foot-tall spherical concert hall will hang suspended inside The Shed in Hudson Yards. Created by avante-garde architects Ed Cooke, Merijn Royaards, and Nicholas Christie, the Sonic Sphere offers concertgoers a truly unique experience with immersive 3-D sound and light explorations of music that redefine the idea of a concert hall. Performances in the sphere will run from June 9 through July 7.

Dubbed the 30th and 11th Apartments, the mixed-use building at 606 West 30th Street sits across from the High Line and just south of New York City's newest neighborhood. Qualifying New Yorkers earning 40, 60, and 100 percent of the area median income can apply for the apartments, priced from $772/month studios to $2,592/month two-bedroom apartments.

Michelin-starred Chef Gabriel Kreuther to run two restaurants at Hudson Yards’ Spiral tower
A starchitect-designed office tower in Hudson Yards will offer cuisine curated by a Michelin-starred chef. The Spiral, the 66-story building designed by Bjarke Ingels, will be home to two new dining concepts created by Gabriel Kreuther, known for his eponymous restaurant near Bryant Park, developer Tishman Speyer announced Wednesday. Kreuther will operate a full-service restaurant and an all-day cafe serving breakfast and lunch; both are expected to open next year.

NYC’s highest ice skating rink to open at Hudson Yards’ observation deck Edge
A sky-high ice skating rink is opening at 30 Hudson Yards this month. Located within the indoor section of the skyscraper's observation deck Edge, "Sky Skate" is a 1,024-square-foot rink made of synthetic ice and surrounded by breathtaking views of the city skyline. At 1,131 feet in the air, the Sky Skate will be the highest ice skating rink in New York City.

Norman Foster’s 78-story office tower opens in Hudson Yards
A boutique luxury office building designed by Norman Foster officially opened in Hudson Yards this week. Described as "multiple buildings within a building," 50 Hudson Yards is a 1,011-foot-tall tower that takes up a full block between Hudson Boulevard and 10th Avenue, between 33rd and 34th Streets. Developed by Related Companies, Oxford Properties, and Mitsui Fudosan America, 50 Hudson Yards is already over 84 percent leased, with Meta and BlackRock as two of the tower's anchor tenants.
