$950M South Bronx development Bankside set to open first residential tower this year

The most expensive private development in the Bronx continues to progress. Brookfield Properties announced this month that the final tower at the phase one site of Bankside, a seven-tower waterfront complex in Mott Haven, has topped out. The $950 million mixed-use project takes up two parcels on either side of the Third Avenue Bridge on the Harlem River. Third at Bankside, located at 2401 Third Avenue, has officially topped out and developers have broken ground at Lincoln at Bankside, located at 101 Lincoln Avenue.

This $2,662/month apartment at Bjarke Ingels’ Harlem rental has robotic furniture

East Harlem rental The Smile is noteworthy for a lot of things--its design by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), a fitness center with spa-like amenities, and the rooftop complete with a plunge pool, multiple whirlpools, and an outdoor movie theater. And now, a handful of its units have further bragging rights, as they've been outfitted with a modular furniture system by Bumblebee Spaces. Using a robotic system that's affixed to the ceiling, the bed, desk, and storage elements can all be easily summoned or stowed-away into the ceiling. The unit is actually asking $3,550 a month, but with four months free on a 16-month lease, the net effective rent is $2,662.

Plan for massive towers and public beach in Williamsburg moves ahead with new looks

The proposal to construct two mixed-use skyscrapers and a public beach on the North Brooklyn waterfront is moving forward, although with an updated design, timeline, and name. As first reported by Brooklyn Paper, Two Trees Management is preparing to start the city's uniform land use review procedure (ULURP) in the coming weeks for its project "River Ring," which includes two huge towers designed by Bjarke Ingels with more than 1,000 units of housing, a YMCA, and an environmentally-conscious park with a cove and beach.

Applications are currently being accepted for 55 affordable apartments at a new sustainable development in Brooklyn's Ocean Hill neighborhood. The Harry T. Nance Apartments, located at 1860 Eastern Parkway, stands 10 stories and includes a new home for the True Holy Church. New Yorkers earning 30, 40, 50, and 60 percent of the area median income can apply for the units, ranging from studios to three-bedrooms priced between $457/month and $1,485/month.

The Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon and his wife Nancy Juvonen have put their incredibly unique six-bedroom Gramercy penthouse on the market for $15 million. The nearly 5,000-square-foot home at 34 Gramercy Park East is the result of combining four different apartments over three floors. There's something funky to see everywhere you look (Fallon decorated the home with antique finds from around the world), but some of the highlights include a "saloon room" with a vintage barback, a sound-proof pantry, custom-built furniture and wall coverings, and a hidden playroom equipped with monkey bars and a "jailhouse intercom" to the upstairs playroom. Located at 22-44 Jackson Avenue in Long Island City, the development, dubbed 5 Pointz LIC, contains two buildings, one at 47 stories and the other at 41, and over 1,100 units of housing. New Yorkers earning 130 percent of the area median income can apply for the apartments, which range from $1,850/month studios to $3,200/month three-bedrooms.

Located at 22-43 Jackson Avenue, The Prime contains 71 units, all of which boast balconies. And perhaps even more exciting for some, a Trader Joe's grocery store will open on the building's ground floor this year. Sales launched earlier this month at the building, developed by Circle F Capital and designed by Andres Escobar's Lemay+Escobar Architecture, with residences starting at $700,000.

Actress Sela Ward puts her artsy Soho loft on the market for $5.8M

According to the New York Times, the couple used the three-bedroom co-op as a pied-a-terre, as their main residence is in Meridian, Mississippi. But now, they're looking for a larger apartment closer to Central Park to accommodate visits from their two children. Ward and Sherman bought the loft at 16 Crosby Street in 2016 for $4,200,000 and then embarked on a year-long renovation that preserved its 19th-century details such as 14-foot tin ceilings, exposed brick walls, and cast-iron columns while adding their own contemporary, artistic touch.

Plan for 900-foot tower with 1,325 rentals at 5 World Trade Center moves forward

Plans to build a 900-foot mixed-use tower with 1,325 units of housing at 5 World Trade Center are moving forward. The boards of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation voted on Thursday to approve the recommendation of the selection committee for the proposal from Brookfield Properties, Silverstein Properties, Omni New York, and Dabar Development Partners. The site is the former location of the Deutsche Bank building which was damaged in the September 11 terrorist attacks and later demolished. The developer will now enter negotiations for a lease for the residential tower, expected to measure 1.56 million gross square feet.

Back in 1978, this space at Tribeca's American Thread Building at 260 West Broadway was a student gallery for the School of Visual Arts, according to Art Nerd New York. At the time, a 20-year-old Keith Haring had just started attending SVA and created a large mural here for an exhibit. New York City’s tributes to Martin Luther King Jr.

While some of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s most memorable moments of his career happened further South, like the Montgomery bus boycott and his "I Have a Dream" speech in Washington, support for his goals hailed first from advocacy organizations based in New York City, like the National Urban League. King held sermons at Riverside Church in Morningside Heights, led a march from Central Park to the United Nations in protest of the Vietnam War, and received a Medallion of Honor from Mayor Robert Wagner. As a way to honor King and his immense impact on the advancement of civil rights, the city has named streets, parks, playgrounds, and more after the icon. On MLK Day this Monday, celebrate by learning about memorials dedicated to him citywide.

The retailer, known for its affordable flat-pack furniture, will take up 115,000 square feet at a shopping mall in Rego Park. Trader Joe’s set to open at major new 125th Street project in Harlem

Trader Joe's will join Target at a major new mixed-use development in Harlem. It will be the grocery store's 13th location in New York City. The $242 million project is known as the Urban League Empowerment Center, as it will be home to a new headquarters for the National Urban League and the state’s first civil rights museum. It will also include 170 affordable and mixed-income apartments and office space for local nonprofits.
