Penn Station revamp to begin in late 2027, Trump says

Construction on the long-delayed revamp of Penn Station will start in late 2027, the Trump administration announced on Wednesday. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said proposals will be accepted starting in October for the redevelopment of the busy train hall, with a goal to start construction in two years. The news comes after the feds put Amtrak in control of the project over Gov. Kathy Hochul in April. It's unclear how much the project will now cost under the updated timeline and possibly new design, but previous estimates from the MTA listed a $7 billion price tag.

The Midtown South rezoning received key approval this week, with new community and infrastructure improvements included in the deal. The City Council Subcommittee on Zoning and Franchises on Wednesday voted to approve the Midtown South Mixed-Use (MSMX) plan, which updates zoning rules for 42 blocks of the neighborhood to allow for 9,535 new homes, including 2,842 permanently affordable apartments, in an area where housing development has been largely restricted. In addition to lowering the residential density allowed on certain blocks in the original plan, the City Council and City Hall agreed to $488 million in community infrastructure investments, including a busway on 34th Street and protection for Garment District workers.

Clark Street station reopens after hotel awning collapse

Subway service has been restored at the Clark Street station in Brooklyn Heights following the collapse of a concrete awning on Sunday. A video posted to social media by Council Member Lincoln Restler captured the moment the 15-by-20-foot awning on Henry Street came crashing down over the station entrance. Service was suspended at the station after the Department of Buildings (DOB) had found a similar structure above another entrance unsafe. As of Tuesday morning, the vacate order was lifted, and subway service was restored.

City Council to override Adams’ veto of street vending bill

The City Council intends to override Mayor Eric Adams' veto of a bill that would decriminalize most street vending violations in New York City. Intro. 47-B, passed by the Council in June with a veto-proof majority of 40-8 and three abstentions, was vetoed by Adams last Wednesday. He argued the bill “sends the wrong message” amid the city’s increased enforcement against illegal vending. 12 more NYC subway stations to get accessibility upgrades

A dozen more New York City subway stations will receive accessibility upgrades under the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's 2025-2029 capital plan. Announced Tuesday, upgrades include new elevators and other ADA-accessible features. The MTA says the new plan aims to make at least 60 percent more stations accessible and ensure that 70 percent of all subway trips begin or end at an accessible station. The accessibility projects are a result of a lawsuit settled by the MTA that required 95 percent of all stations to be accessible by 2055.

This year’s ‘Summer Streets’ will run length of Manhattan, with car-free corridor from Brooklyn Bridge to Inwood

More than 22 miles of car-free streets will open to New Yorkers for outdoor recreation and summer fun starting this month. On Tuesday, Mayor Eric Adams announced the city's largest ever "Summer Streets" program, which will dedicate select roadways across all five boroughs to pedestrians and cyclists from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on five consecutive Saturdays, from July 26 through August 23.
