Another summer weekend is upon us and we can't wait to get out the office and into the city. This weekend Manhattan's Summer Streets is back, and New Yorkers are invited to stroll (or bike) up and down Park Avenue, which will not only be closed to moving traffic, but jam packed with countless activities, music and food the whole way through. And if you decide to take this car-free jaunt, be sure to check out Ewerdt Hilgemann's sparkling sculptures along the pedestrian median. Once you've got your fair share if sunshine, head on over to the AIA NY's happy hour and mingle with architects and their fans. If art is more your thing, get to know Newark's public art community and their ideas over drinks at the NeWWalls mixer. And finally, for graffiti art and heady assemblages pay visits to the exhibitions at Tabla Rasa Gallery and Pioneer Works in Red Hook—the latter followed with a wild after party, of course.

NYC Ferry unveils new routes, including connection between Brooklyn and Staten Island

Next month, New York City ferry riders will be able to take new direct routes between the Bronx and the Rockaways, and Staten Island and Brooklyn. On Monday, the city’s Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) announced that the new service will launch on December 8, addressing long-standing gaps in the ferry network after years of advocacy from Brooklyn and Staten Island officials for direct service between the two boroughs. Another new route will link Throgs Neck to the Rockaways, offering a two-hour trip from the Bronx to the beach.

IKEA to open small-format store in Soho

Soho is getting an IKEA. The Scandinavian furniture retailer purchased a six-story commercial building at 529 Broadway from billionaire Jeff Sutton’s firm, Wharton Properties, for $213 million, according to property records. Ingka Group, which owns most IKEA stores worldwide, plans to open a 25,000-square-foot store on the building’s first and second floors, as The Real Deal first reported, continuing its push for smaller-format locations.

A plan to redevelop 122 acres of Brooklyn’s industrial waterfront—adding thousands of apartments and a modern port—just cleared a major hurdle. A task force overseeing the $3.5 billion redevelopment of the Brooklyn Marine Terminal on Monday voted to advance the project, which includes a 60-acre all-electric port, 6,000 new apartments, and 28 acres of open space from Cobble Hill to Red Hook. The vote followed five previous postponements and comes just before the deadline to secure city and federal funding, according to The City.

The New York Department of Environmental Conservation is attempting to get the Gowanus Canal reclassified to a degree of quality that would compel the city to clean it up enough for swimming, according to Crain's. The Brooklyn Superfund site is currently classified as a Class SD waterway, which supports fishing; a proposal that includes raising the quality of 30 waterways would redesignate the waterway as Class SC, allowing for swimming and boating. But are we ready to leave the banks for a swim in the canal's fragrant waters?

NYC releases greenway master plan with 40 miles of new paths

New York City has an ambitious vision to expand its greenways by 40 miles, offering a continuous walk around Manhattan and car-free cycling from Brooklyn to Far Rockaway. Released on Wednesday, the "Greater Greenways" plan is the city’s first master plan for its greenway network in more than 30 years. The plan assesses the existing 500 miles of paths and proposes new pedestrian and cycling routes to fill in existing gaps across the five boroughs, with construction on some short-term projects beginning as early as 2028.

It’s been eight years since the city’s first commuter ferry set sail, and in that time, it’s completely transformed the way New Yorkers think about real estate. "The NYC Ferry has absolutely shifted the real estate landscape, especially in pockets of the city that weren’t always considered commuter-friendly," says Michelle Griffith, luxury real estate broker at Douglas Elliman. "Eight years ago, some of the waterfront neighborhoods like Red Hook or certain areas of the Rockaways felt much more remote. NYC to remove ‘floating jail’ in the Bronx, build new marine terminal

A decommissioned floating jail moored off the Bronx in the East River will soon be removed, clearing the way for a new marine cargo terminal. City officials announced the plan Monday outside the vessel in Hunts Point, known as the Vernon C. Bain Correctional Center, and said they will soon issue a request for proposals to remove the barge. The cleared space will house the new Hunts Point Marine Terminal, which will facilitate the transfer of freight from ships to final delivery.

NYC added 34,000 new homes in 2024: These neighborhoods built the most

Nearly 34,000 new homes were completed in New York City in 2024, the most units in a single year since 1965. The increase in housing units, up over 6,000 units from last year, is driven by a surge of permits filed in 2022 before the 421-a tax incentive expired. The Department of City Planning this week released an update to its Housing Database with new tools highlighting housing production across the city. While the data reveals Brooklyn had the highest number of newly constructed units of all the boroughs, Long Island City in Queens led the city with 1,859 new building units in 2024.

IKEA is coming to Fifth Avenue in Midtown

IKEA is returning to Manhattan. The home goods store will open a new store in Midtown within 570 Fifth Avenue, an office tower developed by Extell Development. Ingka Investments, the investment arm of Ingka Group which owns most IKEA stores worldwide, plans to open an 80,000-square-foot store across two cellar levels with a corner entrance on Fifth Avenue. The Swedish company opened a store on the Upper East Side in 2019 but closed about two years later.

NYC to redevelop 122-acre stretch of Brooklyn coastline

New York City is transforming a 122-acre stretch of Brooklyn's coastline into a dynamic, mixed-use community and modern maritime port. Mayor Eric Adams on Tuesday announced an agreement that gives the city full control of the Brooklyn Marine Terminal, enabling its redevelopment into a vibrant community hub with housing, retail, green space, and a modern port. The development zone, primarily controlled by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, spans over a mile from the southern edge of Brooklyn Bridge Park down to Red Hook, as Bloomberg reported. The deal is the city's largest real estate transaction in terms of size in 20 years.
