285 Lafayette Street was built in 1886 as the Hawley & Hoops chocolate factory. In 1999, a rooftop addition was added and the building was converted to condos. Today, the open-floor lofts in a prime Nolita location are a celebrity magnet; David Bowie bought the penthouse in 1999 (his widow Iman still lives there), and Courtney Love and Ian Schrager are also former residents. But you don't have to be a star to appreciate the colorful, modern design of this three-bedroom unit, currently renting furnished for $20,000 a month. Another added bonus is that the Soho branch of the New York Public Library is in the base of the building.

Mitch Alfus—self-proclaimed Leather King, owner of a leather and animal skins supplier, and man we would cast in a remake of "Crocodile Dundee"—has just listed his loft at 285 Lafayette Street for $11.5 million. Alfus purchased the unit ten years ago for a considerably less $3.4 million and has since renovated the pad, adding a fourth bedroom and an interestingly placed master bathtub.

Saul Rubinek Sells Nolita Loft for $4.9 Million

Entertainment jack-of-all-trades Saul Rubinek has unloaded his Nolita loft at 285 Lafayette Street for $4,875,000, according to city records. The Canadian actor, producer, director, and playwright originally listed the three-bedroom unit in May as a $22,000/month rental. The price gradually dropped to $15,000/month by July, but now he's completely parted ways with the home, selling it for much higher than the $2.95 million he paid in 2011.
