Coney Island’s beachfront amusement district, Luna Park, is set to reopen for the 2024 season next weekend. The historic amusement park will reopen on Saturday, March 23, kicking off a weekend of fun featuring its annual opening ceremonies, including the first ride and egg cream christening of its famous rollercoaster, the Coney Island Cyclone. Keeping in line with tradition, to celebrate the 97th birthday of the Cyclone, the first 97 visitors will ride the rollercoaster for free and get a free egg cream.

“With Luna Park in Coney Island, we are thrilled to continue to enhance and bring timeless experiences to life, through experiential and interactive innovation, at America’s Playground,” Alessandro Zamperla, president and CEO of Central Amusement International Inc., said.

“We continue to honor and highlight Luna Park’s legacy of innovation through new, exhilarating, and unique intergenerational attractions and experiences for our guests.”

This year, the park features new menus at its concession stands and restaurants, upgraded arcade areas, and two new retail shops.

Additionally, Luna Park is making history by opening a brand-new attraction, the Electric Eden Raceway. Opening later this season, the ride will feature New York City’s first sustainable electric-powered Go-Karts, and “video mapping gamification.”

On top of the new upgrades, Luna Park’s Halloween Harvest and Frost Fest celebrations are set to return during the fall and winter seasons. Halloween Harvest offers visitors a chance to enjoy fun-filled autumnal and spooky-themed activities, while Frost Fest, which was hosted for its inaugural season this year, transforms Luna Park into a winter wonderland with an ice-skating rink and other winter-themed activities.

The Thunderbolt, which is the five boroughs’ first major steel roller coaster, will celebrate its 10th birthday in June.

Zamperla continued: “This year, we are thrilled to announce new attractions and upgrades to the park, showcasing our unwavering commitment to delivering a memorable experience in the heart of New York City. Join us as we revitalize, celebrate, and create cherished moments for families and friends throughout the year.”

Deno’s Wonder Wheel is also set to reopen for its 104th season on March 24 at 10 a.m. for its 39th annual “Blessing of the Rides” ceremony. Hosted on the boardwalk in front of the legendary attraction, the start of the season will be celebrated with a ribbon-cutting, and the first 104 guests will get a free ride on the Wonder Wheel.

Coney Island’s amusement district will be open on weekends through Memorial Day.
