City seeks proposals for Meatpacking District development with 600 apartments

A plan to replace a Manhattan meat market with hundreds of apartments, retail, and open space is moving ahead. Mayor Eric Adams and the city's Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) on Wednesday released a request for proposals for Gansevoort Square, a proposed mixed-use development with 600 apartments, half of which would be affordable, and retail on Little West 12th Street between Washington Street and 10th Avenue in the Meatpacking District. The project is part of the mayor's recently announced "Manhattan Plan," which aims to add 100,000 new homes in the borough over the next decade.

Also known as 1 Java Street, the development is fully electric and has a geothermal system that reduces carbon emissions by over 50 percent compared to traditional systems. NJ towns must meet affordable housing deadline by end of the month

Municipalities across New Jersey are approaching a crucial deadline in the state's efforts to address its affordable housing shortage. Local officials from all 564 municipalities have until January 31 to accept or object to the number of new affordable homes they must develop over the next decade and propose their own target. In October, the state’s Department of Community Affairs released calculations showing a current need for 65,410 low- and moderate-income homes, with an additional 84,698 needed over the next 10 years.

The City Council on Thursday voted 31-20 to approve Mayor Eric Adams' landmark "City of Yes" housing proposal, marking a major step forward in addressing New York City's critical housing shortage. The final version of the plan largely resembles the mayor's original vision but includes amendments by the Council that lower the projected number of new homes from 109,000 to roughly 82,000 over the next 15 years. The City Council moved Mayor Eric Adams' "City of Yes" housing proposal forward on Thursday after securing $5 billion in funding and making several changes to the original plan. The Council's zoning subcommittee and land use committee voted in favor of the text amendment with modifications to keep some parking requirements and restrict accessory dwelling units (ADUs) in some neighborhoods. The latest version keeps the mayor's plan largely intact but will reduce the number of projected new homes from 109,000 over the next 15 years to 80,000.

Updated Midtown South rezoning plan could create nearly 10,000 new homes

New zoning tools will allow the city to build bigger apartment buildings in Midtown Manhattan, doubling the new housing units permitted under a proposed rezoning. The Department of City Planning on Thursday released an updated draft of the Midtown South rezoning plan to incorporate floor area ratio (FAR) caps of 15 to 18, enabled by the state's recent repeal of the 12 FAR cap. This change allows larger developments and roughly 9,700 new homes, up from a previous estimate of 4,000, in a 42-block area of Midtown where housing development has been largely prohibited.
