Connect with nature under a Manhattan starry night with a camping trip in Central Park next Saturday, August 19th. This usually illegal activity is totally lawful through a free event hosted by the city’s Urban Park Rangers. The family camping program happens every summer at select venues, like Central Park in Manhattan, Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, Mccarren Park in Brooklyn and Fort Totten Park in Queens.

The Parks Department provides dinner, breakfast, and tents for campers, but you will need to bring your own bedding and sleeping bag. Campers will also take a morning bird-watching hike so binoculars are recommended. While programs take place in all five boroughs, space is limited. Families are chosen by lottery, so sign up via the Urban Park Rangers Registration page here.

Registration has opened for the Bronx, Manhattan and Brooklyn camping events, but be sure to mark your calendars as the Queens camping lottery opens on August 16.
