It’s your chance to have a free quintessential summer experience, albeit not typical a New York City one. The Battery Conservancy on Thursday will open a lottery for free tickets to camp at the historic 25-acre public park. As part of the Battery CampOut, families are provided with tents, campfire singalongs, s’mores, and a lightning bug show. But remember to bring your own sleeping bag.

This is the first summer the Battery Conservancy has run the camping program. The lottery opens roughly two weeks before the next scheduled CampOut. On Thursday, New Yorkers can enter starting at noon for the August 17 event. The lottery officially closes on Monday at noon, with winners notified via email that day. Sign up here.

Located at the southern tip of the Financial District, the Battery offers views of the Statue of Liberty as well as access to attractions like Castle Clinton and the SeaGlass Carousel.

If you miss out on the free tickets, there are other ways to experience urban camping in the city, although not for free. Collective Retreats is offering “luxury camping” on Governors Island, which includes 1,500-thread count sheets, private en-suite bathrooms, and a glamping must-have, electricity and WiFi. Book your stay here.
