Next Greenpoint Landing phase includes 1,000 apartments across three towers

More than 1,000 new apartments are headed to the Greenpoint waterfront. The Domain Companies, LMXD, and Park Tower Group announced a joint venture partnership to build the next phase of Greenpoint Landing, a development along a 22-acre stretch of the East River that will eventually be home to 5,500 apartments. The next phase, "Block C" of the master plan, includes three mixed-income rental buildings, 20,000 square feet of retail space, and a waterfront public park.

Plan to build huge 72-story tower at 395 Flatbush Avenue enters public review

The proposal to turn an outdated Downtown Brooklyn office building into a 72-story tower with over 1,000 apartments officially entered public review this week. Mayor Eric Adams on Thursday announced that 395 Flatbush Avenue Extension has begun the seven-month uniform land-use review procedure (ULURP). The tower would be the second-tallest in the borough after the Brooklyn Tower, and feature roughly 1,200 mixed-income residences, with at least 25 percent set aside as permanently affordable for households earning 60 percent of the area median income.

Located at 202 Tillary Street, the property offers modern apartments with panoramic skyline views, complemented by a suite of upscale amenities. New Yorkers earning 40, 60, 110, and 120 percent of the area median income can apply for the units, with rents starting at $784/month for studios, $828/month for one-bedrooms, and $967/month for two-bedroom apartments.

Restored Richmond Barthé frieze returns to the Kingsborough Houses in Crown Heights

A monumental artwork that has been a fixture of a Crown Heights public housing complex for 80 years has been restored. Created by Harlem Renaissance artist Richmond Barthé, "Exodus and Dance" is an 80-foot cast-stone frieze depicting biblical scenes and Black figures dancing that has been on display at the city's Kingsborough Houses since 1941. Eight decades of exposure to the elements caused the stone to crack and crumble, requiring a major restoration to preserve the public artwork. After an 18-month conservation project, officials on Thursday cut the ribbon on the rehabilitated "Exodus and Dance" sculpture, which once again stands as a community landmark.

This Crown Heights block was named the greenest in Brooklyn

A lush stretch of Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights has been named Brooklyn’s greenest block. On Tuesday, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden (BBG) awarded the title to the block between Franklin and Bedford Avenues as part of its free annual Greenest Block competition. The block—the first winner in the residential category to be made up primarily of apartment buildings—was praised for creating a "remarkable community space centered around plants and urban gardening."

The rise of the next Williamsburg: How Gowanus went from eyesore to eye-popping prices

It’s been 20 years since The New York Times reported that city officials voted "to let developers turn the decaying north Brooklyn waterfront, with its relics of Brooklyn's industrial past, into a neighborhood of residential towers with a parklike esplanade along the East River." In the two decades since, this version of Williamsburg was replaced by the first generation of "hipsters," glassy condo towers with Manhattan views, and throngs of Manhattanites crowding the L train to hit up Union Pool and Maison Premiere. Now, a new rezoning is putting another Brooklyn neighborhood on the same path. This time, the waterfront is the once-toxic Superfund-designated Gowanus Canal.

Brooklyn Mirage owner files for bankruptcy, venue won’t reopen this year

After "several months of financial distress," Avant Gardner, the operator of East Williamsburg music venue Brooklyn Mirage, filed for bankruptcy on Monday. In a statement posted on Instagram, the company said it filed for Chapter 11. While the Great Hall and Kings Hall venues are set to remain open throughout the process, the Brooklyn Mirage—whose grand May reopening was abruptly canceled just hours before its first show and remains closed—will not reopen this year.

Clark Street station reopens after hotel awning collapse

Subway service has been restored at the Clark Street station in Brooklyn Heights following the collapse of a concrete awning on Sunday. A video posted to social media by Council Member Lincoln Restler captured the moment the 15-by-20-foot awning on Henry Street came crashing down over the station entrance. Service was suspended at the station after the Department of Buildings (DOB) had found a similar structure above another entrance unsafe. As of Tuesday morning, the vacate order was lifted, and subway service was restored.

The Brooklyn Cyclones minor league baseball team will host its first-ever "PURRRRfect Game" on Tuesday, July 29, allowing fans to bring their feline friends to Maimonides Park to watch the team take on the Jersey Shore BlueClaws. Developed and designed by Avery Hall, 544 Carroll Street launched leasing this week for 133 apartments, including a duplex that could go for as much as $25,000/month. As first reported by the New York Post, the four-bedroom measures nearly 2,400 square feet plus outdoor space and surpasses the next priciest apartment in the rapidly developing neighborhood by more than $13,500.

Work begins on 10-building East New York development with 2,000 affordable homes

Construction has kicked off on the first phase of a transformative new housing development with 2,000 affordable homes in East New York. Gov. Kathy Hochul on Tuesday announced the start of work on phases 1A and 1B of Innovative Urban Village, a 10-building project that will revitalize the Christian Cultural Center’s (CCC) 10.5-acre campus at 12020 Flatlands Avenue with new housing and community amenities. The initial phase will bring more than 800 affordable apartments, along with a workforce development center, a childcare facility, a performing arts venue, a grocery store, and green space with walking paths.

Judge halts Adams’ removal of Bedford Avenue protected bike lane

A disputed stretch of protected bike lane on Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn was spared demolition for a second time, after a state judge blocked the Adams administration from removing it just hours before construction was set to begin. On Tuesday, state appellate court judge Lourdes M. Ventura issued a temporary restraining order, halting the city’s plan to shift the lane from the curb to the center of the avenue between Willoughby and Flushing Avenues. The decision came less than a week after another judge dismissed a lawsuit filed by street safety advocates, ruling that Mayor Eric Adams could move forward with the redesign because it “is not a major transportation project.”

283-unit affordable housing and cultural arts center moves ahead in Brownsville

A new all-electric development that will bring affordable homes and a cultural arts center to Brownsville is moving forward. City officials on Thursday announced that financing has closed for the Brownsville Arts Center & Apartments (BACA) at 366 Rockaway Avenue. The project will include 283 affordable rental units for households earning between 30 and 70 percent of the area median income, with a mix of studio to three-bedroom layouts. The project will also feature a 28,000-square-foot cultural arts center with flexible performance, rehearsal, and studio space for community arts organizations. Construction will begin this month, with completion expected by December 2027.

Bedford Avenue protected bike lane can be removed, judge rules

Part of a protected bike lane along Bedford Avenue in Bed-Stuy will be removed after a New York state judge said Mayor Eric Adams can move forward with a plan to get rid of three blocks of the lane. Brooklyn Supreme Court Judge Carolyn Walker-Diallo on Wednesday gave the green light to the city’s Department of Transportation (DOT) to shift the lane from the curb to the center of the avenue between Willoughby and Flushing Avenues, according to Gothamist. Adams first announced the change in June after community backlash over collisions between cyclists and pedestrians, which prompted a lawsuit from street safety advocates to block the removal.

For the two decades since it rose at 208 Vanderbilt Avenue in Brooklyn's Fort Greene neighborhood, this modern townhouse has been recognized as an important architectural addition to the streetscape. Asking $6,500,000, the four-story single-family residence is also home to a working artist's studio, making it a perfect model for creative Brooklyn living. 70,000 new homes could be built along Interborough Express with zoning changes

More than 70,000 new homes could be built within a half-mile of the proposed Interborough Express (IBX) train line through land-use changes. Outlined in an analysis released Thursday by the New York Building Congress, and first reported by the New York Times, implementing land use changes could lead to the development of tens of thousands of new homes within a 10-minute walk of the 19 stops along the 14-mile light rail line, with the potential to exceed 100,000 units over a decade. However, these changes would face many obstacles, as the IBX will run through diverse neighborhoods with varying residential densities and local willingness to welcome new homes.

The spirit of Wimbledon comes to Brooklyn Bridge Park

"The Hill in New York" returns from Friday, July 11 to Sunday, July 13, offering a chance to watch the tennis tournament in an English garden–inspired setting, with the Brooklyn Bridge and NYC skyline as iconic backdrops. Presented by the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club and Brooklyn Bridge Park, the event kicks off on July 11 with a free opening concert by Rita Ora, followed by screenings of the ladies’ singles and gentlemen’s doubles finals on July 12, and the ladies’ doubles and gentlemen’s singles finals on July 13. Admission is free via an online ballot, which is open through July 1.
