Final phase of affordable La Central complex breaks ground in the South Bronx

Work began last week on the second, and final, phase of La Central, a five-building affordable housing development in the South Bronx. The $343 million second phase includes two mixed-use buildings with 420 affordable apartments, with more than 60 units set aside for formerly homeless New Yorkers. The development, near Third Avenue and 149th Street in Melrose, a shopping district known as the Hub, has been in the works for years, with a request for proposals for the city-owned vacant lot issued in 2013 and a plan approved by the City Council three years later. Upon its completion in 2028, La Central will include nearly 1,000 affordable homes, retail, community space, and public green space.

Applications are now being accepted for 182 mixed-income apartments at a new luxury rental tower in Jamaica, Queens. Located at 163-05 Archer Avenue, the Monarch is a 24-story building with 605 apartments, state-of-the-art amenities, and retail space. New Yorkers earning 80 and 130 percent of the area median income can apply for the units, priced from $1,596/month for one-bedroom units to $3,753/month for two bedrooms.

Trader Joe’s new Harlem location will open this week

Harlem's first-ever Trader Joe's opened on Thursday, July 25, the grocery store announced. The 17,800-square-foot location can be found at 123 West 125th Street, part of a mixed-use development with office space, retail, affordable housing, the headquarters of the National Urban League, and a new museum dedicated to the civil rights movement.

First two rentals open at huge South Bronx housing complex La Central

The first two rentals at the five-building South Bronx complex La Central officially opened on Wednesday. The mixed-use towers, located at 556 and 600 Bergen Street in the borough's Melrose neighborhood, contain 500 units of housing, a new YMCA, studio space for BronxNet, and a rooftop farm operated by GrowNYC.

With 8,000 units, Jersey City project will be the Tri-State’s largest mixed-income housing development

After receiving approval from the city, last week, developer BRP Companies revealed renderings for their Bayfront Redevelopment Project in Jersey City along the Hackensack River. Located on a former brownfield site, the 100-acre project will be built in phases, eventually resulting in 8,000 units of mixed-income housing (35 percent of which will be affordable), said to be the largest such project in the region. This fall, construction will kick off on the 16-acre first phase, known as Cove Pointe, which will bring 1,092 units of housing, with 382 set aside as affordable and workforce housing.
