Tsumiki Are Legos Reimagined Using Japanese Design Principles

We can't deny that we're big fans of LEGO bricks here at 6sqft. They incite within us welcomed nostalgia for a simpler time when our love for design and architecture was just budding. However, now that our taste has evolved we can see how the brightly colored squares may not be complementary to a more adult interior aesthetic. The folks at the Tokyo architecture firm Kengo Kumo and Associates agree and have reimagined the classic LEGO with a minimalist Japanese twist. Their new blocks, also known as Tsumiki, are shaped like an inverted V and made from wood certified by the Forest Stewardship.

Grand Central Terminal has a great deal of hidden history and underground secrets, but this powerful image of German helmets taken in 1918 might not be on everyone's radar. The photo documents a collection of captured WWI helmets from German soldiers stacked in a pyramid shape on Victory Way. The politically potent tower was in view of the employees from New York Central Terminal with the famous train station visible in the background.

Designers Bridie Picot and Matt Smith of Thing Industries have the perfect solution with their Sacrificial Chair. It wasn't designed as a traditional chair (sorry folks you can't sit here), but instead to replace "that chair" that is "constantly covered in crap."

BONCHO: A Bike Poncho to Keep Your Legs and Feet Dry

The weather in New York can vary from sunny skies to downpours without notice, and most of us spend at least part, if not all, of our daily commute outside at the mercy of the elements. While the standard umbrella protects us from the rain when we're on foot, the bike riding community has continued to rely on plastic bags and oversized raincoats to stay dry, leaving their legs and feet exposed to the conditions. Thanks to VANMOOF and their new bike poncho design, cleverly named BONCHO, city cyclists are about to get a lot drier.

Bio-Inspired HEAVN Caffeine Lamp Will Boost Your Attention Levels Like Coffee

It's been estimated that roughly 70 percent of working people spend more than six hours a day basking in the artificial light of a computer screen. Research has concluded that overstimulation by artificial light can have negative consequences on your health as bad as metabolic problems, insomnia, depression, concentration disorders, headaches, fatigue and increased stress. This unfortunate reality for today's working population was the inspiration for the development of HEAVN Caffeine, an innovative office light designed to mimic the therapeutic frequencies of natural light. The light is said to not only make you more productive by optimizing your biorhythms—"it boosts your attention levels with the push of a button, just like a strong espresso," says its designers—but it will also help you stay healthier.

StudioMDA Explores Fantasy and Sexuality in a Hank Moody-Inspired Bedroom

It's commonly known that Hank Moody, the main character from Showtime's Californication is an ex-New Yorker making his way through the wild streets of Los Angeles. But this small factoid didn't stop the agency responsible for the show's marketing from building a New York homage to the sexual freedom explored by Moody and many of the other characters in the show. As described by StudioMDA, the designers behind this out-of-the-box deliverable, "the bedroom we designed for him is a perfect room for one of his trysts – a place where pleasure and fetishism are tangible and the boundaries between desire and reality are blurred." Well, we couldn't have said it better ourselves.

A Wood Boat Hull Makes Up the Mezzanine of This Colorful Chelsea Loft

There is an abundance of cool lofts in Chelsea, and we love exploring the interiors of these impressive open spaces. The best part is that the design of each individual unit is often left up to the tenants, resulting in some truly unique layouts. However, it's not so often that we see two units with different owners following they same program, but for the families living in these two adjacent apartments it was the perfect solution. Together they hired SYSTEMarchitects to create two bedrooms in each of their narrow spaces, as well as access to an exterior deck that maximizes natural light and air. Plus, both spaces' 11-foot ceilings gave the design team enough room to create a sleeping and storage mezzanine, which was inspired by a wood boat hull.

The First Panda Ever in the U.S. Lived in a NYC Apartment

Having a pet and living in the city isn't always the easiest arrangement, and unfortunately for many animal lovers it's just not doable. While some of us reluctantly accept the limitations of our living situation, fashion designer and New York socialite Ruth Harkness went beyond the norm on all counts. In 1936, Mrs. Harkness traveled to China in search of a panda, one of the rarest animals of the time. Not only did she find what she was looking for, but she also took her new baby panda back with her to New York.
