One World Observatory to get a magical makeover for the holidays

The holidays are always a special time in New York City, with tons of events and attractions to keep busy from Thanksgiving to New Years. But most festivities don't take place over 1,200 feet in the sky. One World Observatory does just that during their "Winter ONEderland" event, which transforms their 102nd-floor observatory into a magical winter oasis beginning on Nov. 26. Starting with a snowy ride to the top of One WTC, the event features interactive multi-media installations, visits from Santa, and holiday-themed fare and beverages.

Replacement approved for iconic Watchtower sign in Brooklyn Heights

The city's Board of Standards and Appeals voted on Thursday to allow for a replacement of the iconic 'Watchtower' sign in Brooklyn Heights, which was taken down last December. The 15-foot-tall red sign had sat atop the building, which served as the headquarters for the Jehovah's Witnesses, for nearly 50 years. The religious group sold the site at 25-30 Columbia Heights to the Columbia Heights Associates in 2016 and soon after the letters were removed, leaving its framework intact. While originally the Department of Buildings said the sign could not be replaced, the group of developers filed an appeal and won the right to put up new signage in the Brooklyn skyline, as the New York Post reported.

4 and Q trains are taking this weekend off

Two of the city's busiest subway lines apparently need some time off this weekend. The 4 train is not running at all in Brooklyn and does not stop at 11 more stops Uptown and in the Bronx. Although the local 6 typically comes to our rescue, it won't happen this weekend. The 6 is skipping 28, 51, 68, 77, 96, 103, 110, and 116th Streets. Plus, the Q is not running between Prospect Park and 96th Street. But thankfully, the M is running special weekend service along the Q. Before you head out this weekend, check the rest of the planned service changes ahead.

Zaha Hadid Gallery pop-up comes to the ground floor of 520 West 28th Street

A new public pop-up exhibition opened on Thursday that features architectural models and design products from Zaha Hadid Architects. The exhibition is located on the ground level of 520 West 28th Street, the futuristic High Line condo designed by late starchitect Zaha Hadid. The 2,000-square-foot gallery space is a part of Related Companies' High Line Nine, a collection of boutique exhibition space under the High Line. Gallery-goers will see models of 520 W 28th and other projects as well as the latest collaborations from Zaha Hadid Design.

Google expanding to St. John’s Terminal in Hudson Square

Google is expanding its New York City footprint once again. The tech giant is close to inking a deal to buy or lease a planned 1.3 million-square-foot office building at St. John's Terminal, formerly a freight terminal in Hudson Square, that is undergoing a major revamp by COOKFOX Architects. According to the Wall Street Journal, the building, located at 550 Washington Street, could house more than 8,500 Google employees when the project wraps up in 2022. News of this impending deal comes just days after it was reported that Amazon will move its second headquarters, along with 25,000 workers, to Long Island City, although no plan has formally been announced.

Bjarke Ingels’ design for WeWork’s Lord & Taylor takeover shows few changes

The first set of renderings of Bjarke Ingels' restoration of the landmarked Lord & Taylor building was released last month and it appears the starchitect's firm will not sway too far from the original structure's design. WeWork hired BIG last year to preserve the 104-year-old store, which will become the co-working company's new global headquarters. In its presentation on Oct. 30 to Manhattan's Community Board 5, the firm explained its plan to reconfigure the ground-floor, install canopies, replace signage, and more, as first reported by the Associated Press.

Amazon looking at proposed Anable Basin mixed-use site for new home in Long Island City

With Amazon nearing a deal to make Long Island City home to its second headquarters, a big question remains: Where in the Queens neighborhood will the tech-giant house its 25,000 employees? One possible location sits within a waterfront area known as Anable Basin, named for a 150-year-old inlet, sources familiar with the plan told Politico New York. As 6sqft reported last November, the family-owned plastics company Plaxall, who owns the site, proposed a massive rezoning of the area that would allow for 335,000 square feet for industrial spaces, nearly 5,000 housing units, and a new public school.

Work finally resumes at Brooklyn’s first 1,000+ foot tower

Since the plan to bring the first supertall tower to Brooklyn was approved by the Landmarks Preservation Commission in the spring of 2016, few updates have been announced about the project. While construction kicked off last year, work on 9 DeKalb Avenue was stalled for months. But YIMBY reported on Tuesday that construction of the Downtown Brooklyn tower appears to have made some progress, with its foundation now visible and workers on site. The planned 1,066-foot-tower is being developed by JDS Development, with SHoP Architects handling its design.

Applications are now being accepted for 43 affordable senior housing apartments in the Foxhurst neighborhood of the Bronx. Formerly home to the Home Street Presbyterian Church, the new residential building at 1017 Home Street offers amenities like an on-site super, lounge, fitness center, bike room, a roof terrace, and card-operated laundry. Available studio and one-bedroom apartments are set aside for seniors who are 62 years or older and who earn a maximum of $41,750 per year. Eligible residents pay 30 percent of their income and must qualify for Section 8.

A housing lottery launched on Monday for 211 mixed-income apartments in a new South Bronx building. Located at 1530 Story Avenue, the rental is part of the Lafayette-Boynton residential complex in the neighborhood of Soundview and is one of two new structures at the site developed by Nelson Management Group and L+M Development Partners. Qualifying New Yorkers earning 60, 90, 95, and 125 percent of the area median income can apply for the batch of units, which range from $865/month studios to $2,184/month three-bedrooms.

New flyover video of Google’s Pier 57 shows off huge multi-level rooftop park

The transformation of Pier 57 from a former maritime port and bus garage into a modern mixed-use development is fully underway. A flyover video of the site uncovered by CityRealty last week shows off its planned 80,000-square-foot outdoor rooftop park, which claims to be the largest public outdoor space in Chelsea. Led by RXR Realty and Youngwoo & Associates, the $380 million project will bring 265,000 square feet of office space, with Google as the primary tenant.

Surpassing 1,000-foot mark, SHoP’s skinny supertall shows off incredible Central Park views

Without even reaching its final height of 1,428 feet tall, SHoP Architect's Midtown supertall is already boasting amazing views. New photos released this week of 111 West 57th Street, which recently surpassed 1,000 feet high, show off views from the tower's 64th, 72nd, and 73rd floors. Upon completion, the Billionaires' Row tower will become the tallest residential building in the world, taking the title from 1,396-foot 432 Park Avenue, (until 1,500-foot Central Park Tower tops out). With a super slender frame (a ratio of 1:24), 111 West 57th Street is also set to become the skinniest skyscraper in the world.

You can buy the earliest ‘portable’ NYC subway map for $12,000

New Yorkers have used maps to navigate the city's subway system since the first year the system opened 114 years ago. And one of only two known examples of the Interborough Rapid Transit's first guide is for sale for $12,000, the New York Times reported. That 1904 transit guide, along with many more historic maps of New York, can be found at the Martayan Lan Gallery, which is kicking of its "New Amsterdam to Metropolis: Historic Maps of New York City 1548-1964" exhibit on Nov. 9.

New Yorkers will be running this weekend. Will the subway?

One of the best New York City events takes place this weekend: the NYC Marathon. With an expected 50,000 runners participating in the race on Sunday, and thousands more cheering on the sidelines, you can definitely expect some transit and traffic disruptions. The marathon kicks of 8:30 a.m. in Staten Island and ends in Central Park. In addition to typical subway delays and reroutes (or just a total lack of service), the MTA is also closing the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge on Nov. 4 between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. If you need help getting to the event on Sunday, check out the Marathon Subway Map from the MTA. New York City to launch affordable co-living pilot program

On the heels of London-based housing brand The Collective's announcement to bring a huge, co-living community to Brooklyn, the city of New York announced on Thursday plans to get involved with the growing housing trend. The city's Department of Housing Preservation and Development said it will launch a pilot program that lets developers seek public financing in exchange for creating affordable, shared-housing developments, the New York Times reported.

Norman Foster will design new Park Avenue headquarters for JPMorgan Chase

JPMorgan Chase has tapped starchitect Norman Foster to design its new 2.5 million-square-foot headquarters at 270 Park Avenue, as first reported by Bloomberg. The new 70-story tower would replace the bank's current offices, located in the Union Carbide building. Foster + Partners designed the nearby office tower at 425 Park Avenue, as well as Apple's spaceship-like headquarters in California.

Bjarke Ingels tapped to design $110M upgrade for Central Park’s Delacorte Theater

Central Park's beloved Delacorte Theater will get its first major renovation since it was constructed over 50 years ago, the New York Times reported on Wednesday. The Public Theater announced it has tapped architect Bjarke Ingels' firm BIG to design a $110 million upgrade for the open-air theater, home to the free productions of Shakespeare in the Park. Kicking off in 2020, the project aims to reorganize the theater's space, improve its resiliency, and make it overall more safe and efficient.

Qualifying New Yorkers earning 130 percent of the area median income can apply for the apartments at 18 Stanhope Street, which include four $2,175/month one-bedrooms and four $2,270/month two-bedrooms. The units do not offer that much of a discount from the market rate apartments at the building, with current listings starting at $2,500/month for a one-bedroom and $2,700/month for a two-bedroom.

The 86th Street B, C station reopened last week after five months of renovations and upgrades. The improved Central Park West station now features six colorful mosaic and ceramic murals translated from artist Joyce Kozloff's "Parkside Portals" artwork, which depicts different perspectives of the neighborhood. The art shifts from aerial views of Central Park to close-ups of Beaux-Arts and Art Deco elements found on the iconic facades of surrounding buildings.

Historic building at Brooklyn Navy Yard to be restored as modern manufacturing space

A former boat repair facility at the Brooklyn Navy Yard will get restored as a modern manufacturing space, the last adaptive reuse project at the 300-acre site. The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC) last month closed on $42 million in financing to restore Building 127, which was built in 1904 by the U.S. Navy for ship construction. S9 Architecture is handling the "historically sensitive" gut renovation, which will bring 95,000 square feet of modern industrial space to the Yard by 2020.

Columbus Circle is getting a ‘small-format’ Target next year

New York City is getting its 28th Target store, the retail giant announced on Monday. The company will open a "small-format" store near Columbus Circle on the Upper West Side in 2019. This new Target is part of the company's plan to open 130 small-format stores by the end of next year in urban and highly-populated suburban areas, as well as near college campuses.
