At the site of a former matzo factory on the Lower East Side, a shiny new penthouse is available for purchase. The seven-story condo building 150 Rivington Street replaced Streit’s Matzo Factory, a neighborhood icon in operation for nearly 90 years before closing in 2015. Atop the brand-new project is a sun-drenched three-bedroom apartment with over 500 square feet of outdoor space and classic city views, listed for $4,350,000.

Wrapped in nearly 13-foot-high floor-to-ceiling windows, the apartment benefits from an abundance of natural light. The oversized living space features a functional open layout, with convenient built-ins for extra storage and easy access to the lush private terrace, planted with perennial sage and evergreens.

The chef’s kitchen features a large center Caesarstone slab island and the best-of-the-best appliances from Smeg, Liebherr, and Miele. Completing the space is a walk-in, temperature-controlled wine cellar with enough space for 600 bottles.

The primary suite takes up the eastern corner of the unit and boasts a giant walk-in closet. The serene en-suite bath is clad in marble and features a custom double vanity and radiant heated floors. The two additional bedrooms are well-sized, one with a cozy en-suite bath.

The icing on the cake is the home’s private roof deck, equipped with a Napoleon grill, tons of space for lounging and entertaining, and unobstructed Manhattan views.

The condo is fit for contemporary living, with a Sonos system, four zones of heating and AC, and a private storage unit.

The building contains 45 apartments, including four penthouses, and offers amenities like a shared rooftop terrace, a sun deck for yoga, a 24-hour attended lobby, a fitness center, and bike storage.

The Streit family owned and operated the buildings located at 148-154 Rivington Street since 1925; the company was one of the last family-run matzo factories in the country. Developer Cogswell Realty bought the historic site for $30.5 million with plans to demolish the factory and build a new condo.

While Streit’s moved its operations upstate to Orangeburg, New York, the site’s storied history is still remembered. Photos taken by Joseph O. Holmes depicting the final days of the factory now hang in the lobby of 150 Rivington.
