Waterline Square’s Italian food hall will open on the Upper West Side this summer

February 22, 2019

If getting to 23rd Street is tricky for you (or you’d just rather not deal with the Eataly tourists), another Italian food mecca will be opening on the Upper West Side this July or August. As 6sqft previously reported, GID Development Group tapped the Cipriani family to create a 28,000-square-foot “experiential food market” for their Waterline Square mega-development. After attending a recent Community Board 7 meeting, West Side Rag got more details about what the food hall will offer, including a full-service restaurant, pasta lab, bellini bar, and, of course, cheese shop.

When the food market was announced in 2017, James Linsley, President of GID, said, “We are creating a dynamic food, beverage, and market destination, where Midtown meets the Upper West Side, with one of the world’s most established and recognized names in dining and hospitality. Cipriani joining us as a retail partner for Waterline Square further signifies the important evolution of this waterfront neighborhood and will provide future residents and visitors with the ultimate lifestyle experience all in one place.”

According to West Side Rag’s account, the full roster of offerings is as follows:

  • Full-service restaurant (similar to Bellini, Cipriani’s South Street Seaport restaurant)
  • Butcher
  • Rotisserie market
  • Fishmonger
  • Raw bar
  • Prepared foods shop
  • Cheese shop
  • Pizza bar
  • Pasta lab
  • Salad shop
  • Produce stand
  • Juice bar
  • Coffee bar
  • Gelato and pastry shop
  • Bakery
  • Bellini bar

The as-of-yet-unnamed food hall is expected to open this summer when it will create about 200 jobs.

Waterline Square is a 2.2 million-square-foot development spanning the Hudson River site bound by West 59th and 61st Streets. It will include 263 luxury condo units and 800 rentals (250+ of which are affordable) spread across three towers from starchitects Rafael Viñoly, Richard Meier, and Kohn Pedersen Fox, as well as a new 2.6-acre park and a 90,000-square-foot amenity club. Construction is currently wrapping up.
