The Osborne co-op was built on the northwest corner of 57th Street and 7th Avenue in 1885 as one of NYC’s first grand apartment buildings. Just four years later, Carnegie Hall would rise across the street, cementing its stature among the city’s elite addresses. A two-bedroom apartment in the building has hit the market for $3,500,000, and just by looking at its opulence, one feels transported back to the 19th century. From the imposing coffered ceilings and stately columns to the decadent fabrics and gilded decor, the home offers an old-world sophistication not often found anymore.

As soon as you enter the home the grandeur begins with a Chinoiserie gold hand-painted black lacquer foyer. You’ll also see the French-baked oak floors in a chevron pattern with custom borders that are seen throughout.

The kitchen, located off the foyer, is definitely the simplest room in the home, but it’s not without luxury. It features quartersawn oak with all high-end appliances hidden by panels.

From there, you’ll find yourself in the large living/dining room, where 13-foot coffered ceilings, carved columns, moldings, and beautiful built-ins set the stage. Nearly full-floor, extra-deep arched windows overlook 57th Street, which has come to be known as Billionaires’ Row for its collection of supertall skyscrapers. In the dining room, an oversized window makes a lovely window seat.

The primary bedroom suite occupies the entire southwest wing. It’s clad in a dark wool linen tweed that creates a sensual mood. Another window seat here overlooks 57th Street. Off the bedroom is a his-and-hers dressing room with custom built-in closets. This opens to the gorgeous bathroom that is wrapped in Calacatta marble and hand-painted gold leaf walls. There are a pair of Louis XVI treillage bath vanities, a Murano smoked glass chandelier, mahogany window shutters, a large soaking tub, and a separate water closet.

Though not pictured, the other bedroom suite is on the opposite end of the apartment. It also has a dressing room and en-suite bathroom.
