A four-story Chelsea townhouse once owned by actor Ethan Hawke has hit the market for $5,980,000. Located at 353 West 21st Street in the Chelsea Historic District, the six-bedroom, four-and-a-half bathroom residence measures 21 feet wide and features a spacious full-floor primary suite on the top level, an outdoor terrace, and a backyard and garden with a self-irrigation system. Hawke purchased the home in 2005 for $3,000,000 and lived there until 2013 when he sold it for $5,867,000.

On the parlor floor, there is an airy living and entertaining space, anchored by a gas fireplace and built-in shelving. There’s also a full eat-in kitchen and a separate dining area.

Large double pocket doors with translucent green glass panels divide the main living area from a staircase. This level also includes a half-bathroom for guests situated off the main hallway.

The kitchen features state-of-the-art appliances, including a six-burner Wolfe stove with a vented hood, a Bosch dishwasher, a built-in microwave cabinet, and granite and butcher-block countertops.

Evidence of Hawke’s stay in the home is on display via a facsimile retro red refrigerator and painted cabinetry, elements added by the actor and retained by the current owners.

Three bedrooms, two full bathrooms, and a laundry room with a full-sized stacked washer and dryer set are found on the second level. This level also features multiple closets with ample storage space. One of the bedrooms can alternatively be used as a playroom, media room, or gym.

The top-floor primary suite features a large, private, planted terrace with views overlooking the backyard and its garden. The ensuite bath features a steam shower and a soaking tub next to the casement windows facing the terrace.

The backyard includes a sunken patio with a retractable awning and a native-plant garden maintained by an automatic water irrigation system.

The ground floor is a legal second unit with its own entrance. The floor has been occupied as a single-family residence for several decades, according to the New York Post. The townhouse also boasts an unfinished basement with storage shelves and mechanical systems.

The home’s prime location allows for an unparalleled degree of privacy and quiet. The tree-lined block is closed to traffic Monday through Friday during business hours, during which residents have sole access to parking.
