Workshop/APD’s ‘Crafted Modern’ Hudson Views Home Grows out of an Old Ranch

June 25, 2015

anchCan you believe this grand contemporary home was once a ranch? The architects in charge of the surprising renovation, NY-based Workshop/APD, updated a traditional ’60s ranch building, retaining much of its original shape. Situated in Briarcliff Manor, the aptly named Hudson Views home boasts sweeping river views and its original gabled roof, and it still sits atop the ranch’s original foundation dating back to its agricultural days.

Located atop a hill overlooking eastern New York’s tidal estuary, the Briarcliff Manor home falls into what the architects describe as the “crafted modern” category. For them, the word “crafted” represents the materials, their textures, imperfections, and how they change with time; while the word “modern” references their love for timeless aesthetics and the new or unexpected ways that craftsmen can transform overlooked objects.

The luxurious Hudson Views grows out of a traditional 1960s ranch. Much of the original ranch’s shape was retained, including its characteristic gabled roof which runs over the central living areas. Other features were reinterpreted with modern materials, and new details were incorporated to create a modern home that still speaks the old language.

Measuring 6,000 square feet, the two-level home is said by architect Kotchen to feel three times as large as it did before, despite the fact it had “only a few minor enlargements.” This is emphasized by the floor-to-ceiling glass window panes that open the house up to river views, the interior’s neutral color palette, and, of course, all of the natural light flooding every corner of the home.
