Three Nordic Designers Collaborate on These Curious Candleholders

March 22, 2016

These strange but beautiful candleholders come via a collaborative effort by designers from three different Nordic countries. Hugdetta from Iceland, Petra Lilja from Sweden, and Aalto+Aalto from Finland joined forces for an experiment entitled 1+1+1, which “examines and reimagines objects by having each studio design an object consisting of three distinct parts and then mixing the parts up into unpredictable combinations.” The result is a series of cabinets, mirrors, lamps, and these candleholders.

While Reykjavik’s husband-wife team Hugdetta characterizes their designs by a refined craftsmanship, Malmö-based Petra Lilja works with materials she finds at hand. And Helsinki-based Aalto+Aalto creates special everyday objects that are timeless with a strong identity.

The 1+1+1 project was born at DesignMarch in Reykjavik in 2015, when the studios first designed a floor lamp. The collaboration resulted in a whopping 27 different lamps. For Helsinki Design Week later on the same year, the aim was cabinets. For Stockholm Design Week this year, they made mirrors, and for this year’s bustling DesignMarch in Iceland, the collection of candleholders was crafted.

The almost brutal form of cooperation guided by simple rules, no compromises, local materials, and each designer’s approach resulted in weird and wonderful objects that can be mix-matched to create a interesting display.
