The Metropolitan Transportation Authority this week announced major service changes on the 4 and 5 subway lines throughout January and February as the agency works to replace switches along the Jerome Avenue line. The 37-year-old switches will be swapped for new ones that will last for the next two decades, improving the daily commutes of roughly 1.1 million riders, according to the MTA.

The changes started on January 5 and will last through late February. On Monday through Friday, from 11:45 p.m. to 5 a.m., the 4 train will not run between 149th Street-Grand Concourse and 125th Street. The 4 train will run in two sections, between Woodlawn and 149th Street and between New Lots Avenue and 125th Street, and on the 6 line from 3rd Avenue-138th Street.

There will be free shuttle buses running between 149th Street-Grand Concourse and 3rd Avenue-138th Street.

On weekends starting January 23, from 9:45 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, 4 trains won’t run between 149th Street-Grand Concourse and 125th Street. The 4 will run between Woodlawn and 149th Street-Grand Concourse and between Crown Heights-Utica Avenue or New Lots Avenue and 125th Street, and on the 6 from 3rd Avenue-138th Street.

The 5 train won’t run between East 180th Street and Bowling Green, but will run between Eastchester-Dyer Avenue and East 180th Street. Take the 2 train for service between East 180th Street and 149th Street-Grand Concourse, free shuttle buses for service between 149th Street and 125th Street, and the 4 train for service between 125th Street and Bowling Green.

During weekday rush hours starting January 26, 4/5 trains will run less frequently and at reduced speeds.

To avoid overcrowding, the MTA recommends taking the B, D, or 2 for service between the Bronx and Manhattan. Note, the Metro-North will accommodate subway riders at no additional cost for travel between University Heights or Wakefield and Grand Central.

As amNY reported, there are even more subway service changes planned for this upcoming weekend. Nearly every line will be affected in some way from January 9 through January 12, with only the F, M, Q, 1, and 6 trains, along with the Franklin Avenue and Rockaway Park shuttles, running normally.
