Vogue editor-at-large Hamish Bowles has long been celebrated for his distinctive and eclectic taste. The design editor purchased this pre-war Greenwich Village duplex for $1.5 million in a 2008 estate sale and proceeded to infuse every corner of it with lush textiles and colors, antique furnishings, vintage books, and couture menswear. The longtime Vogue fixture relocated back to his native London when he took a job as editor-in-chief of The World of Interiors magazine in 2021. Now, his charming two-bedroom co-op at 45 East 9th Street is for sale, asking $2,900,000. Bowles tells the New York Times, “During the pandemic it became a salvation–and a marvelous place for me to call home.”

The co-op occupies the first two floors of an apartment building built in the mid-1920s. The 1,400-square-foot home has one bedroom; a second bedroom was converted to a dining room but can easily be converted back.

A foyer done in violet and cream leads to an opulent parlor/living room. Beneath high, graceful vaulted ceilings, custom millwork, and a wood-burning fireplace convey both opulence and coziness.

A windowed galley kitchen is a vintage confection, with marble worktops providing a contrast to high-performance stainless steel appliances. The apartment’s many well-preserved architectural details are very much in evidence in the dining room, including decorative moldings, hardwood floors and a wood-burning fireplace.

Up a sepia-toned staircase, the bedroom is a study in opulence, with textured wall coverings and drapes in shades of crimson and lilac. A walk-in closet–there is plenty of storage space throughout the home–befitting a Vogue editor is lushly carpeted and toile-wrapped.

The apartment off the Fifth Avenue Gold Coast has been featured in numerous design publications. The full-service elevator building offers a 24-hour doorman, a full-time resident manager, a landscaped rooftop garden, a laundry room, and a private storage area. Pets, washers/dryers, and pieds-a-terre are allowed.
