Sawyer Berson’s Residence in Southampton is Composed of Calming Glass and Stone Pavillions

You might not think of a starkly modern home as calming or tranquil, but then you’ve probably never seen the Residence in Southampton by Sawyer|Berson architects. Built for designer Kelly Behun and her family, the home is characterized by its dramatic overhangs, large expanses of glass, and flowing, open floor plan. Part of a series of pavilions, the main house, pool, pool house, and guest wing are all oriented south to take advantage of the stunning beach views.

The seven-bedroom home boasts a screening room, gym, and an an impressive collection of art. Perhaps the most interesting element of the residence is the infinity pool, which is visible from the gym and yard.

The perfectly manicured yard, complete with boulders from a local quarry, is accessed via a stone stairway, which follows the property’s natural slopes. Cleverly placed overhangs projecting from the stucco façade provide shade both in the yard and on the many terraces, one of which features a whirl pool. Cabana-like lounging and dining areas surround the large, Indiana limestone-lined infinity pool.

Interior and furniture design Kelly Behun is a protégé of Philippe Starck. She wanted to create a beach home for her family that was undoubtedly contemporary, but also felt warm and inviting. With a combination of clean, modern furniture, angular sculptures, and organic art pieces, she accomplishes this perfectly. In fact, Kelly designed the hand-cut ceramic mosaic tile table (pictured above) herself. The sunny space turns into a loggia, thanks to operable floor-to-ceiling glass walls.

Though the home has a masterful visual art collection, including an informal outdoor sculpture garden and paintings by the likes of Jean-Michel Basquiat, the architecture itself serves as a site to behold. For example, a custom-made plaster staircase and adjacent sculptural piece grace the entryway. Serene reflecting pools also add an element of surprise.

The kitchen is one of the warmest rooms in the house, with an eclectic mix of natural materials and exotic décor. The walnut-slab bar is a custom design, while the walnut table is the work of Kelly.
