Rosie O’Donnell is trading Manhattan for Malibu. The comedian put her Midtown East penthouse on the market last week for $8,300,000, following a move to the West Coast, as the New York Times first reported. The Long Island native and longtime New York City resident paid $8,000,000 for the apartment in 2017. The home, located atop 255 East 49th Street, measures nearly 3,600 square feet across three levels, including an impressive private rooftop.

The penthouse is just one of two at Sterling Plaza, a full-service condominium off Second Avenue. The top level of the duplex features an aptly-named great room anchored by a honed black granite wood-burning fireplace. The corner dining room is surrounded by glass walls and features a cozy window seat facing the East River and Long Island City.

The sunlit chef’s kitchen features Gaggenau and Miele appliances, including a 70-bottle wine refrigerator, two dishwashers, two ovens, and two integrated sinks. The huge island is fit for a feast and the floor-to-ceiling windows provide a stunning backdrop at any time of day.

Tucked away in a private corner, the primary suite features a spa-like en-suite bath that includes a walk-in steam shower, a free-standing tub, double vanities, a separate water closet, and heated floors.

The “Guggenheim-inspired” staircase leads down to the 32nd floor, which has two more bedrooms, with one boasting a private balcony. The white marble bath features a Jacuzzi bathtub, a separate shower, and heated floors. Also on this level is a private Swedish sauna. The 32nd floor even has its own entry, ideal for hosting visitors.

A 1,620-square-foot private roof deck is the icing on the cake, with 360-degree views of Manhattan icons, like the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building. Plus, the rooftop has an enclosed bar equipped with a fridge, wine cooler, and microwave.
Rosie is no real estate newbie. The actor has sold and bought properties across the tri-state area, with Manhattan purchases including a Greenwich Village duplex she sold in 2014 for $9 million and a Hell’s Kitchen one-bedroom she used as a pied-à-terre.
According to the Times, O’Donnell relocated with her daughter in 2021 to Los Angeles, where she bought a farmhouse for $4.6 million and then sold it four months later. She is currently renting a beachfront home in Malibu, the newspaper reports.
