Art Nerd NY’s top art, architecture, and design event picks – 6/29-7/5

Art Nerd New York founder Lori Zimmer shares her top art, design and architecture event picks for 6sqft readers! If you’re staying in town for the Fourth weekend, be sure to flex your cultural muscle! Check out a mix of fine art and architecture twice this week- first catch a slice of the Vatican at Santiago Calatrava’s Oculus, then head to the Park Armory for a project by Ai Weiwei and Herzog & deMeuron. Spend some time in City Hall Park with Katja Novitskova’s new series of sculptures, then relax in the rarely-opened New York Marble Cemetery for a group show by Ugo Rondinone. Party it up on the cobblestone streets of Wooster for their annual block party, then grab a blanket and catch Brigitte Bardot on the big screen under the stars. Finally, experience Paris’ Urban Arts Fair at Spring Street Studios- and check out a book signing with me on Friday!

Art Nerd New York’s top event picks for the week – 3/30-4/5

In a city where hundreds of interesting events occur each week, it can be hard to pick and choose your way to a fulfilling life. Ahead Art Nerd founder Lori Zimmer shares her top picks for 6sqft readers! Spring is upon us and so is a whole new week of great art events. This weekend, see some of the best of the photography world at AIPAD or head to Brooklyn to check out Welancora Gallery’s new partnership with Nu Hotel. The Brooklyn Museum is also deconstructing the artist’s persona and hosting a new Georgia O’Keeffe exhibition. #MidnightMoment also kicks off a new film in Times Square—this April, Naoko Tosa’s "Sound of Ikebana" will take over the screens every night. Finally, come pick up my new book, "The Art of Spray Paint," and check out its corresponding exhibition at Wallworks Gallery in the Bronx.

In a city where hundreds of interesting events occur each week, it can be hard to pick and choose your way to a fulfilling life. Ahead Art Nerd founder Lori Zimmer shares her top picks for 6sqft readers! A new month means a new art film across the screens in Times Square, with March inviting folks to jump into Matteo Zamagni’s "nature abstractions." Graffiti kings Crash, Bio and Nick Walker host an exclusive exhibition in the West Village, while Donna Ruff’s lace-like paper pieces are taking over Rick Wester in Chelsea. Artist Dionisios Fragias does a familial collaboration with his wife at Emmanuel Fremin, and Dexter Wimberly guest curates at Ground Floor Gallery presenting Tammy Nguyen. Spend the day fusing art and activism at MoMA’s Wikipedia edit-a-thon, then head to the French Consulate’s gorgeous bookstore, Albertine, for a talk with famed designer Agnes B. Finally, check out the Brooklyn Bazaar, at the former Polonaise Terrace, and pick up medical history ephemera, taxidermy, and other oddities at their special annual flea market.

In a city where hundreds of interesting happenings occur each week, it can be hard to pick and choose your way to a fulfilling life. Art Nerd‘s philosophy is a combination of observation, participation, education and of course a party to create the ultimate well-rounded week. Jump ahead for Art Nerd founder Lori Zimmer’s top picks for 6sqft readers! Let’s immerse ourselves in some art this weekend to ease some of the stress we’ve gone through during this election, shall we? First, get the inside scoop on Times Square’s latest Midnight Moment artist Emilio Perez, then head to the beautiful Park Avenue Armory to experience the Art Deco and mid-century modern world at the Salon Art + Design. Later “Once More, with Feeling” will take you into a group show that delves into emotional expression, and over at C24, Katja Loher transforms the inside and outside of the gallery into an alternative world. After that, transport yourself to the mountains of Nepal with the new sound installation at the Rubin Museum of Art, and then bone up from art experts at the Art Conference. Finally, if you need one last goodbye to Obama, head to the Marcy Project on Saturday for their tribute show, and if you’re still feeling blue, dance it away at the Whitney’s Annual art party.

Lower Manhattan's Arts Brookfield is stretching its curatorial arm uptown with a new sculpture presentation by John Monti, and further uptown (in the Bronx) British stencil artist Nick Walker shows his iconic Vandal character in works on paper you can take home. Mighty Tanaka Gallery comes back in pop-up group show form, and Brooklyn's Brilliant Champions brings LA artist Michelle Blade to Bushwick. Artists, including light artist Esmeralda Kosmatopoulos, tackle the notion of failure in the art world at Radiation Gallery, and light art enlivens the beautiful Manhattan Bridge underpass in DUMBO for IFP Film week. Just across the water, see the world's largest modern-built Viking ship dock in Battery Park City. And upstate, Basilica Hudson celebrates another experimental Soundscape Festival, and closer the home, the Garment District will become home to eight wacky animal sculptures by Hung Yi.
