Everything you need to know about getting around NYC this Memorial Day Weekend

May 22, 2019

If you’re hitting the road this Memorial Day Weekend, best not to leave the city between 4:45 and 6:45pm on Thursday, as AAA predicts that car traffic in NYC will be twice as heavy during this time. If you’re depending on the LIRR or Metro-North, the MTA will be adding extra trains, and there will be free Q70 bus service to/from LaGuardia until Friday evening. As an extra treat, most weekend subway disruptions will extend into Monday, but the good news is that there are no additional changes on the 1, 7, A, C, G, F, M, and W lines.

There will be no 2 service between Chambers Street in Manhattan and Flushing Avenue in Brooklyn from 11:30pm Friday to 5am Monday–take the 5 train instead.

In the Bronx, 2 trains replace the 5 between East 180th Street and Dyre Avenue from 11:45pm Friday to 5am Monday. During this time, Dyre Avenue-bound 2 trains will skip the Morris Park, Pelham Parkway, Gun Hill Road, and Baychester Avenue stations.

On Saturday and Sunday, from 6:45am to 7pm, uptown 5 trains will skip the Bronx Park East, Pelham Parkway, Allerton Avenue, Burke Avenue, 219, 225, 233 Streets and Nereid Avenue 2 stations in the Bronx.

There will be no 3 service from 11:30pm Friday to 5am Tuesday–take the 2, 4, or a free shuttle bus instead. 4 trains will replace the 3 between Atlantic-Avenue Barclays Center and New Lots Avenue in Brooklyn, but New Lots-Avenue bound 4 trains will skip Mosholu Parkway, Bedford Park Boulevard, Kingsbridge Road, Fordham Road, and 183rd Street in the Bronx.

From 11:30pm Friday to 5am Tuesday, 6 service between Parkchester and 3rd Avenue-138th Street in the Bronx is replaced by free shuttle buses.

From 5:45am to 8pm on Saturday and Sunday, Coney Island-bound Q trains will run express from Prospect Park to Sheepshead Bay.

Coney Island-bound N and D trains and Bay Ridge-bound R trains will skip Union Street, 4th Avenue-9th Street, Prospect Avenue, and 25th Street in Brooklyn from 11:45pm Friday to 5am Tuesday.

From 11:30pm Friday to 12:15am Saturday, and again from Saturday to Monday, free shuttle buses replace R train service at 36th Street, Steinway Street, 46th Street, Northern Boulevard, and 65th Street in Queens. Buses will also replace E trains at these stations from 11:30pm Friday to 5am Tuesday.

Coney Island-bound D trains will also skip 174th-175th, 170th, 167th, and 161st Street in the Bronx and 155th Street in Manhattan from 9:45pm Friday to 5am Tuesday. And generally, from Saturday to Monday, D trains will only run every 12 minutes.

As usual, there are no B trains on the weekends. Same for the Z.

J service between Broadway Junction in Brooklyn and Jamaica Center in Queens will be replaced by E trains and free shuttle buses from 3:30am Saturday to 10pm Monday.

And finally, we all know what’s going on with the L train.

In addition to the changes listed above, on Monday, all subway and bus lines will operate on a Sunday schedule. This list does not include long-term stations closures.

Per the whims of the MTA, there will probably be other problems, and the problems stated above are subject to change and worsen.
