For the first time since March 2020, the Brooklyn Museum’s popular First Saturdays program will return next month. The program, which got its start over two decades ago, offers a night of free events, performances, activities, and more, on the first Saturday of every month. The famed program resumes on April 2 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

While the museum brought back its First Saturdays during the pandemic as a more scaled-down outdoor event, dubbed First Saturdays Lite, the full-fledged program has been on hold because of the pandemic.

Next month’s opening night will feature the opportunity for guests to participate in the finale of artist Mel Chin’s Fundred Project, a hands-on initiative that advocates for the end of lead poisoning and fights for communities impacted by contaminated water and soil by reinterpreting $100 bills. Newly created bills will be entered into the Fundred Reserve which will then be put on display in the museum’s special exhibition, The Slipstream.

Other events include a performance from New York-based musician Isa Reyes, a town hall-style meeting between Brooklyn Museum directors and Brooklyn City Council members, and pop-up talks with the museum’s Teen Apprentices who will be exploring Black histories and futures through the museum’s American Art galleries.

Later, enjoy performances from surf rock and R&B duo Bathe, pop-up poetry readings exploring Afrofuturism, and a musical finale dedicated to the continued fight for Black justice featuring sets by Niara Sterling, Quiana Parks, and more.

Guests will also be able to purchase specialty cocktails that pay tribute to the renowned Brooklyn Museum event, crafted by Crown Heights bar Ode to Babel.

See the full list of programming for April 2 here. Admission to the event is free, but advanced registration is required.
