PATH to get major service boost, but fare will reach $4 by 2029

For the first time in 25 years, all PATH lines will operate seven days a week, one of the largest service increases in its history. To help pay for the system improvements, fares are expected to rise to $4 by 2029. On Thursday, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey released its proposed $45 billion 2026–2035 Capital Plan, which outlines major service upgrades between Manhattan and New Jersey. Improvements include eliminating transfers between Hoboken and the World Trade Center by mid-2026 and increasing weekend service. To fund the plan, the agency is proposing a 33 percent fare increase from the current $3 base fare, rising in 25-cent increments starting next summer and reaching $4 in 2029.

Hoboken’s PATH station has reopened on schedule after a 25-day closure and a $54 million renovation that brought vital repairs and upgrades to the 117-year-old transit hub. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) on Tuesday announced the station has reopened with new stairs, signage, fresh paint, and critical track improvements designed to enhance speed and reliability for riders. Officials chose a full shutdown to complete the work in under a month, avoiding major service interruptions that could've lasted for at least a year.

Hoboken’s PATH station to close for 25 days

Hoboken residents will have to find a different way to New York City beginning next week as the New Jersey city's PATH station closes for nearly a month. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s $54 million makeover of Hoboken's PATH station begins on January 30 at 11:59 p.m. and ends on February 25 at 5 a.m. The work includes comprehensive repairs to tracks, infrastructure, and stations. During this closure, the Port Authority will provide a variety of travel alternatives, including free shuttle buses, as well as supplemental PATH, light rail, and NJ Transit bus services connecting Hoboken and Manhattan.

PATH begins tap-and-go fare payment pilot

Contactless fare payment has finally made it to New Jersey. Starting Tuesday, five turnstiles at two PATH stations will accept tap-and-go payments as part of a test of the new Total Access PATH Payment (TAPP) system, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced. While TAPP is designed by the same company behind the MTA's OMNY, the two systems are not compatible.

Jersey City to launch on-demand bus service operated by ride-sharing app Via

Commuters in Jersey City will soon be able to hail a city bus from their smartphones. In a partnership with ride-sharing app Via, the city will launch on-demand bus service as an alternative to often delayed-plagued New Jersey Transit, Mayor Steven Fulop announced Thursday. Passengers can request a shared trip using Via's app and then will be given a "virtual" bus stop within walking distance from both pickup and drop-off locations.

Port Authority reveals $1B plan to make PATH trains less crowded, more efficient

With daily ridership on the PATH train hitting record highs, the Port Authority has announced a new plan to ease the crowds and provide improved service. Over the next three years, the PATH will get a new signal system, 72 new rail cars, and increase capacity by up to 40 percent on its Newark-World Trade Center Route—that means room for about 18,000 extra riders during rush hour—by running longer, nine-car trains. “We want this plan to be game-changing,” said Executive Director Rick Cotton.

World Trade Center PATH station will be closed for weekend repairs through 2020

Starting in January, the World Trade Center PATH station will close on weekends to finish repairing damage to tunnels and equipment caused by Hurricane Sandy. Once the repairs start on January 5, service to WTC will terminate at the Exchange Place Station on Saturdays at 12:01 a.m., and reopen at 5 a.m. on Mondays after each weekend.

Proposal to extend PATH train to Newark airport heads to public meetings this week

A new proposal from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey would extend the PATH system's Newark to World Trade Center line from its current terminus at Newark Penn Station to the Newark Liberty Rail Link Station (Airport Station) at Newark Liberty International Airport. The addition would allow better transit access to and from the airport for Lower Manhattan and Bergen, Hudson, and Essex Counties in New Jersey–there is currently no pedestrian or bus access to the Airport Station. The Port Authority is holding two public meetings this week in Newark to discuss the project's scope.

Emergency ferry route between N.J. and Midtown will become permanent this fall

Following the recent Penn Station train derailment and subsequent delays during the busy weekday commute, NY Waterway launched an extra ferry route running from Hoboken to Midtown Manhattan. Now, NJ.com reports, that ferry service will become permanent starting in September of this year. The new ferry will run between between West 39th Street and Hoboken terminal according to NY Waterway president and founder Arthur Imperatore Sr.
