Famed director Baz Luhrmann’s Gramercy Park townhouse could be yours to rent for $75,000/month. Located at 243 East 17th Street, the six-bedroom home spans five stories and overlooks Stuyvesant Square Park. The extravagant townhouse is also available for purchase. Luhrmann and his wife Catherine Martin first listed the home for $19,995,000 in March but later dropped the price to $18,999,500, as first spotted by the New York Post.

The 28-foot-wide Anglo-Italianate-style home was the first of its style to be constructed in the historic district not originally part of a row of uniform houses, according to the Landmark Preservation Commission’s designation report for the Stuyvesant Square Historic District. Built in the 1850s, the home was meticulously renovated in 2019.

Architectural features include a three-bay facade, round-arched windows with original muntins, and a foliate-patterned cast-iron balcony that spans the width of the entire home.

The first floor features a Clive Christian-designed kitchen with state-of-the-art appliances and easy access to a private backyard garden. This green space is equipped with bistro lighting and ivy-clad walls to create a peaceful atmosphere to sit and enjoy meals and simply relax.

Located nearby is a large formal dining room with a wood-burning fireplace and views of the park through full-length arched windows. Four other fireplaces can be found throughout the home. This level also includes a powder room and butler’s pantry.

The home’s parlor level has a floating curved staircase and 16-foot ceilings. There is also a small room off of the main living area that could be used for an office.

Located at the back of the parlor level is the home’s primary suite, which features a walk-in closet and a connection to a corner terrace. Three more bedrooms, two bathrooms, a flexible sitting room, and a laundry room are all found on the third floor.

The top floor served as Luhrmann’s primary space to create, and it was here that he wrote some of the recently-released “Elvis” film, as the Wall Street Journal reported. The fourth floor’s current layout is that of a standalone suite that has its own living room, bar, gym, bedroom, and bathroom.

Before its current owners, world-renowned jazz tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan and his wife Sandy lived in the fourth-floor studio.

The home has an English basement, which features a media room, additional laundry machines, garden access, and an additional bedroom with a separate entrance.

Luhrmann, director of iconic movies like “The Great Gatsby” and “Elvis,” purchased the property in 2017 for $13.5 million. The couple listed the property back on the market due to the pandemic’s impact on international travel, which made it particularly difficult for the Australian duo.
