This week, Times Square Arts delights twice- first with a new #MidnightMoment that invites a moment of relaxation amidst the concert jungle, then a scream fest at the AMC Theater. Herman Bas echoes queer art history at Lehmann Maupin, while Ground Floor Gallery brings ugly and cute side by side. The take of Genesis P'Orridge and Lady Jaye, who spent years getting plastic surgery to look like one another, is told in film at the Rubin Museum, and Jenny Sabin uses 3D technology to weave an epic, illuminated pavilion at the Cooper Hewitt. The absolute mayhem of Armory Arts Week is upon us once again, with the international art world descending upon our fair city. The Armory Show leads the way once again, taking over the West Side's Piers 92 and 94, with a scattering of satellite fairs rounding out Manhattan. VOLTA takes on a new location at Pier 90, while SCOPE Art Show continues to impress with cutting edge leaders. Further downtown, PULSE hits up the Metropolitan Pavilion once again, and curator-led SPRING/BREAK takes residence at the former post office across from Penn Station. Newcomer Art on Paper impresses for a second year (and will feature a booth co-curated by yours truly) on the shores of the East River at Pier 36. The Art Show by the ADAA sticks with the traditional at the Park Avenue Armory, while Clio reigns supreme as the anti-fair, nestled in Chelsea right next to the High Line. This week we're gearing up for action-packed days full of art events and openings, starting off with a double header photographic exhibit at Emmanuel Fremin Gallery in Chelsea, and the opening reception for Literally Balling, a show featuring stained glass basketball backboards from artist Victor Solomon. With the approaching weekend you can take a trip to Zimbabwe with the opening of ZIG ZAG ZIM, and then follow that up with your perfect excuse to get out of the city: Saturday evening's opening reception of WORD at the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art. Freedman Plaza at the bottom of Central Park to experience the Public Art Fund's latest installation before it closes next week. Across the park, the final performance of the New York City Ballet's collaboration with artist Marcel Dzama is guaranteed not to disappoint (those costumes!). Ground Floor Gallery in Brooklyn is opening a group show inspired by the rare stone lapis, and Charlie Chaplin lights up the theater at the Rubin Museum. Closing out the year is either a reason for total, over the top indulgence, or an excuse to drink champagne at home with close friends and welcome a fresh start. This year, we're leaning toward the former, using the tail end of 2015 as an excuse to seek out the artful magic that New York City holds. I've gotten into the game myself, co-producing an elaborate Surrealist Ball at the beautiful Roxy Hotel that will bring my wildest dreams of Magritte and Dali to life, a party fit for an Art Nerd. There are also some other incredible-sounding events slated for this Thursday, including You Are S0 Lucky, which provides ticket buyers a 72-room manor to explore, followed by four floors of DJs in an undisclosed location. Shanghai Mermaid channels 1920s Hollywood at a downtown Manhattan location transformed into a center of hot jazz, while Sleep No More's McKittrick Hotel continues their narrative decadence with the King's Masquerade. Over-the-top Queen of the Night is hosting a Bond-themed black tie gala complete with sumptuous dinner and after party. Or for something more low key, take the opportunity to check out the private dining club Parlor for glamorous drinks and dancing.

This week is heavy on the Thursday art events, so put on some comfortable shoes and go big tonight. Start by checking out SOFTlab's brand new crystalline pavilion in front of the Flatiron building before heading west to Chelsea where Ron English debuts his new quirky evolution nativity set. Hop over to the The International Print Center to see 68 new prints inspired by Dante's "Divine Comedy." Then hop south to Castor Gallery for Stacy Leigh's creepy yet sexy photos of sex dolls, and end the night by nabbing a piece of nightlife history at the Mudd Club Rummage Sale. Kick the weekend off by immersing yourself in the incredible vibrant world of Ebony G. Patterson at the Museum of Art and Design, then have a religious experience at Catinca Tabacaru Gallery, which will be transformed into a chapel of your dreams. Wrap up the weekend with a cultural experience celebrating sound art at PS 1 for Sunday Sessions.

If you missed out on the '90s heyday of the Tunnel nightclub, this weekend you can experience its new use as an art center and venue for the Editions/Artists Book Fair. Performa15 also comes to town, and lands in Times Square with a new Midnight Moment flick and a performance of live opera. Brookfield Place in Battery Park hosts the annual Canstruction exhibition, where food donated to City Harvest becomes innovative sculptures before becoming a hot meal. Brooklyn's Cotton Candy Machine eeks out another great event before it closes–a mini comic book festival–while around the corner an art show proves that punk rock is not dead. Lastly, iconic photographer Sandy Skoglund recreates an accidental performance that once enlivened a Little Italy window in 1979, this time touching modernity in a Chelsea art gallery window.

Art Nerd New York’s Top Event Picks for the Week – Halloween Edition!

Halloween week is my favorite time of the year, and this week I've rounded up a mix of art and Halloween events that lets uncreatives feel a part of (and even look like) something arty this weekend. Get into the spirit with Margaret Bowland's compelling paintings that brush on wealth and violence at Driscoll Babcock. Susanne Bartsch heads from her museum show at FIT to MoMA PS1's Halloween party for a complete night of museum-quality art (on both counts) and fun. Performance impresario Anna Copa Cabanna hits us twice, with hellish go-go in Williamsburg, then Old New York fun at Sid Gold's Request Room. Performance art group CHERYL invite guests to become part of their immersive world once again with Psychopomp, partnered with Gayletter. After you've washed the glitter out of your hair, rejoin society and check out the beautiful Donald Byrd and Charles Wuorinen dance performance at the Guggenheim, before getting a leg up on the inaugural Honolulu Biennial at a special panel sponsored by Artnet.

This month, meet Detroit's art power-house 1xRun before they finish their New York residency at two great takeover events at Reed Space and at my show "Calm Before the Storm." Focus your art gaze south at FiDi's World Trade Gallery, or head to Dark Victoriana for a history-meets-Halloweeny experience. The Aperture Foundation has their annual extravaganza at Terminal 5, and Michael Arenella gives us a time machine of Old New York at the classic Algonquin Hotel. The Wythe Hotel will host a screening of "Notorious Mr. Bout" followed by cocktails and live music. Finish it off by donning your best nautical-inspired gear and grab a cocktail at Sailors, Sirens and Sea Monsters, a closing party for "Calm Before the Storm"—hosted by me!

This weekend is the end-all be-all for architecture mavens in New York—the annual Open House New York weekend! SO many amazing architectural icons are open and waiting for you to explore them, before they close their doors to the general public for another year. The weekend also brings a not-to-miss exhibition, "Calm Before the Storm," with new works by Logan Hicks and Beau Stanton. Yes, this is curated by yours truly and Natalie Kates, and it's guaranteed to be an epic marine-themed show, complete with a giant shipwreck in the gallery. The intelligent concept store Chamber NYC has its second collection in play with earth-inspired art and design objects curated by Andrew Zuckerman. The Lowline, that underground park we hope comes to fruition, is hosting an open house to check out the techie gadgets they're working on to make it a reality. Detroit print mavens 1xRun are taking over Joseph Gross Gallery, and Greenpoint Gallery is letting the people decide. FIT is hosting a two-day symposium on everything Susanne Bartsch, and lastly, Ad Hoc Gallery will be resurrected for the 6th annual Welling Court Mural Fest.

Art Nerd New York’s Top Event Picks for the Week,10/1-10/7

If you’re feeling fancy, head to The Peninsula for a pricey cocktail and to check out the gorgeous light installation by Grimanesa Amoros on the façade. Lower Manhattan’s Brookfield Place is being taken over by art and fashion this weekend, with interactive projects by fashion stars like Diane Von Furstenberg and Cynthia Rowley, paired with art stars like Olaf Breuning and Rob Pruitt. Take your art experience to the next level with fire, by catching one of Flambeaux’s performances at Hearts of Fire, or get schooled by artist Sarah Sze at Tanya Bonakdar. The new Seaport District is hosting a talk with author David Crabb, and Ridgewood is celebrating its new Night Market of fun. Finish off the weekend by experiencing Michael Alan’s Living Installation, an art-making, living-art party that helps to benefit the artist’s recent personal tragedy—a flood that took his home and art works.

Art Nerd New York’s Top Event Picks for the Week, 9/24-9/29

'Tis a weekend of open studios, and if you are art-thletic enough, you can hit them all. Non-profit chashama is offering free ferry rides to check out the studios of 85 artists (including 6sqft friend Barry Rosenthal!) at the Brooklyn Army Terminal. Hop on the Governors Island Ferry to the LMCC open studios, or get yourself to DUMBO for Smack Mellon's open studios. The work week just got a little better for those of you in the Garment District, as the annual UrbanSpace market opens for the season, offering up tasty delights. Roving gallery Standard Practice is at it again, with a new opening in Williamsburg, and Harlem's Hi-ART kicks off their season with a photo show. If you're going to the World Maker Faire, be sure to check out FIGMENT Festival's David Koren as he talks about co-creating your own reality. Finish off the week with the Public Art Fund's talk at the New School with exhibiting artist Jeppe Hein. And that's a wrap!

Art Nerd New York’s Top Event Picks for the Week, 9/17-9/22

The time has come again for me to flex my curatorial muscle and shamelessly self-promote your next favorite exhibition. This Friday and Saturday, join me in celebrating the work of Tim Okamura and Chris Marshall at our two day pop-up show. But if you can't make that, there is of course other art to be had this week; revisit the beautiful sculpture in Madison Square Park with a live poetry accompaniment, brave the crowds for Shepard Fairey's new show in Chelsea, or check out a curated night of performance, art and socializing at The Happening. For something ENTIRELY different, help support testicular cancer (while taking a look at some extraordinary dick pics) at Soraya Doolbaz's Dicture Gallery. The incredible world of night life maven Susanne Bartsch will take over the Museum at FIT, and the Met Opera welcomes all to its opening night performance, which will be transmitted live to screens in Times Square.
