GRADE’s Elegant Rustic Woodland Retreat Is Built for a Novelist

July 1, 2015

When a novelist client called up GRADE to design an upstate woodland retreat, the NYC-based architects knew it had to be elegant, rustic and also very tranquil. Following these guidelines, they erected the Ridge House, a home located on a leafy Philipstown plot that follows the ridge line of the Hudson River Valley. With comfortable, cozy spaces and walls lined with books, this home is nothing short of inspirational.

Perched atop a hill overlooking a scenic view, the Ridge House hosts nearly 1,900 square feet and is built to meld with its luscious natural surroundings. The house incorporates the forest in its design throughout with the use of raw cedar wood, local bluestone and timber-imprinted concrete.

The home’s aesthetic was planned to evoke the feeling of an elegant rustic environment, blending well-appointed interiors with its natural, rough surroundings.

Completed with antique furniture, a comfy sofa for long hours of reading and massive walls filled with all kinds of books, this reading and writing retreat is full of personal touches. We couldn’t think of a more perfect setting for writing fiction and prose, or just lazing the summer away.
