The Walt Disney Company has tapped Skidmore Owings & Merrill to design its new Hudson Square headquarters, according to a pre-filing application filed last week with the Department of Buildings. As first reported by the Real Deal, the building will rise 19 stories and include “East” and “West” towers. Last July, the media company purchased the rights to develop the property at 4 Hudson Square from Trinity Church, which owns a large percentage of buildings in the neighborhood, for $650 million under a 99-year agreement.

Update 4/2/19: City Winery is moving to Hudson River Park’s Pier 57, Crain’s reported on Monday. The music venue joins other retail and food vendors planned for the pier, which is currently undergoing a $380 million transformation from a former maritime port into a modern mixed-use development, with Google as its primary tenant.
Entertainment venue City Winery has found a new home not far from its current Varick Street location. The founder of the company, Michael Dorf, plans on revealing the exact spot next month and told Crain’s the new location is just a “three-minute Uber or Citi Bike ride” from the present Hudson Square space, which will close this summer. Dorf has been forced to relocate his business to allow for the construction of a new ABC and WABC News headquarters.

For $650 million, Disney plans to develop 4 Hudson Square, which currently contains four buildings. One of those buildings was occupied by City Winery, an entertainment space whose flagship has been located at 143 Varick Street for over ten years. Now after being forced to relocate because of the deal with Disney, the venue’s owner, Michael Dorf, is filing a lawsuit against its landlord Trinity Church seeking over $2 million in damages for “misleading” information.

The Walt Disney Company announced Monday it will move its operations from the Upper West Side to Lower Manhattan, where the media giant is planning to build modern production space and offices. Disney purchased the rights to develop Trinity Church’s property at 4 Hudson Square for $650 million under a 99-year agreement. The site covers a full city block, bordered by Hudson, Varick, Van Dam and Spring Streets.
“This move represents an historic step forward toward our long-term vision for our New York operations,” Robert Iger, CEO of Disney, said in a statement. “The Hudson Square district is rapidly becoming a dynamic, innovative hub for media, technology and other creative businesses.”
