Mamdani unveils $4M pilot program to expand public restroom access in NYC

New Yorkers on the go often face a familiar dilemma: finding a public restroom in a city of immense luxury yet with too few facilities across the five boroughs. On Saturday, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a $4 million pilot program to address the shortage, publishing a request for proposals (RFP) for high-quality modular public restrooms that can be installed quickly and more cheaply than traditional public facilities. Similar to facilities already in use in cities like Los Angeles and Portland, the modular units can operate without direct connection to the city’s sewer and water lines, speeding installation.

NYC public libraries stand against censorship during Banned Books Week

New York City's public libraries are recognizing Banned Books Week this year with a stacked lineup of programs and events. Running from October 5 through 11, the week-long observance arrives amid a continued rise in book censorship. According to the American Library Association (ALA), 2,452 unique titles were challenged in 2024—almost nine times the annual average of 273 titles from 2001 to 2020.

17.6 million fewer vehicles have entered Manhattan since congestion pricing launched this year

Congestion pricing is (still) working. According to Gov. Kathy Hochul and MTA officials, 2.7 million fewer vehicles entered Manhattan below 61st Street in August, a 14 percent drop that matched June for the largest reduction recorded so far in 2025. The positive data comes about a month before a scheduled federal court hearing in October, where the Trump administration’s attempt to end the tolling system will be decided. Since the program began in January, the number of vehicles entering the zone is down 12 percent, with 87,000 fewer trips each day and 17.6 million fewer vehicles compared to last year.

NYC wants feedback on plan to build 100K homes in Manhattan over next 10 years

New York City is asking New Yorkers to help shape its plan to build 100,000 new homes in Manhattan over the next decade. As part of the early stages of the "Manhattan Plan," Mayor Eric Adams and the Department of City Planning (DCP) are seeking feedback through an online survey, a city website, and upcoming in-person events. Residents can weigh in on potential sites for residential development, zoning changes, and other ideas, all of which will help inform a final report expected later this year.
