Art Nerd New York’s Top Event Picks for the Week, 9/24-9/29

'Tis a weekend of open studios, and if you are art-thletic enough, you can hit them all. Non-profit chashama is offering free ferry rides to check out the studios of 85 artists (including 6sqft friend Barry Rosenthal!) at the Brooklyn Army Terminal. Hop on the Governors Island Ferry to the LMCC open studios, or get yourself to DUMBO for Smack Mellon's open studios. The work week just got a little better for those of you in the Garment District, as the annual UrbanSpace market opens for the season, offering up tasty delights. Roving gallery Standard Practice is at it again, with a new opening in Williamsburg, and Harlem's Hi-ART kicks off their season with a photo show. If you're going to the World Maker Faire, be sure to check out FIGMENT Festival's David Koren as he talks about co-creating your own reality. Finish off the week with the Public Art Fund's talk at the New School with exhibiting artist Jeppe Hein. And that's a wrap!

Art Nerd New York’s Top Event Picks for the Week, 7/23-7/29

In a city where hundreds of interesting happenings occur each week, it can be hard to pick and choose your way to a fulfilling life. Art Nerd‘s philosophy is a combination of observation, participation, education and of course a party to create the ultimate well-rounded week. Jump ahead for Art Nerd founder Lori Zimmer’s top end of week picks for 6sqft readers! For those of you who don't have plans to jet set abroad this last weekend before August, there are still plenty of cultural treats to quench your thirst. The famed Slideluck Potshow is taking to the high seas, bringing their well-loved evening of art projections on board the Lilac. Faux-minimalist takes over an unlikely venue—a high-end cleaner—while seminal White Columns Gallery celebrates their summer party. Damien Hirst's Soho mecca heads to the Hamptons, and the Gowanus Ballroom brings us a bevy of talented artists plus the guy who jumps around in his underwear in Union Square. Kids and adults alike can celebrate family day at the awesome Jeppe Hein exhibition now showing at the Brooklyn Bridge Park, or they can head to the Bell House to hear their favorite talk radio personalities. Finally, cap it all off at the last day of the New York Musical Theater Festival.

Art Nerd New York’s Top Event Picks for the Week, 5/21-5/27

In a city where hundreds of interesting happenings occur each week, it can be hard to pick and choose your way to a fulfilling life. Art Nerd‘s philosophy is a combination of observation, participation, education and of course a party to create the ultimate well-rounded week. Jump ahead for Art Nerd founder Lori Zimmer’s top picks for 6sqft readers, beginning tonight! It's almost Memorial Day, which means your weekend is probably already chock full of picnics, barbecues and outdoor drinking activities. But in case it isn't, we've rounded up some arty- and some Memorial Day-themed activities to keep the long weekend packed full of fun. Cool off with some public art in Brooklyn Bridge Park, be the first to hop over to Governors Island this season, or see Tom Cruise on the deck of the Intrepid. You can also get outside of your borough comfort zone and head to Far Rockaway to celebrate surf and photography, hear from some women in downtown rock, or try out your best dance moves at a hip hop party sponsored by the Museum of the City of New York. Then round out the weekend with the serenity—and opulence—of Buddhist art from Kashmir. There, weekend sorted.

NYC Events 8/8: Tour a Post-Disaster Housing Prototype; NYC’s First Art Deco Scavenger Hunt

Most gallery owners have closed up shop for the season, likely heading to the Hamptons for some well-deserved R&R. But New Yorkers staying in town can still enjoy fine art (beyond one of our lovely air conditioned museums). Head to Brooklyn's Metrotech campus to enjoy the Public Art Fund's newest project—a mirage of color and shape by Sam Falls that will change over time as the sun and rain beat down on it (so check it out while it is brand-spanking-new!)—or to a nature-inspired opening at Ouchi Gallery. If architecture is more your thing, join the AIA NY for a private tour of the OEM Disaster Housing Prototype, or gather a group of arch-nerd friends for the first ever Art Deco Society of New York Scavenger Hunt. If you can't stand the heat, tuck into the theaters at MoMA to catch a classic silent film, or enjoy the shade of the High Line over head at the Abington House's weekly Wednesday parties.
