Marisa Tomei’s former East Village townhouse is back on the market for $6.85M

For $6.85 million, you can buy the home where actress Marisa Tomei, producer Hal Willner, and musician Charles Mingus have all rented over the years (h/t NY Post). Overlooking Tompkins Square Park in the heart of the East Village, the five-story, 6,400-square-foot building at 153 Avenue B dates back to 1900 and is currently set up as five, floor-through units.

There are 14 total bedrooms and 6.5 baths, with high ceilings, a fireplace and plenty of storage. However, the buyer can convert the space to a single-family home or condominium. The current owner, who’s had the property for the past 60 years, recounted to the Post some of the home’s storied past:

On the night that Robert Kennedy was shot, for instance, Mingus rang our bell. I remember seeing this heavy-set man in tears, crying to my mother about how they shot Bobby, too. His longtime lover lived on the fifth floor of our building with her children — she must not have been home at the moment he stopped over.

My parents worked on John Lindsey’s campaign for Mayor. His appearances at our house — to use the bathroom, grab a drink, refresh his shirt — were frequent during his campaign. I remember his long gait as he walked across our living room, and the bright warmth of his smile.

This isn’t the first time a Tomei residence has made the news. Since last year, 6sqft has covered the lawsuit between Sean Lennon and Marisa Tomei’s parents, Gary and Addie Tomei. The couple sued their neighbor Lennon over a 60-foot-tall tree that spread roots on their property, cracking their stoop and breaking their railings. The legal battle came to a close this March after Lennon settled the $10 million suit and removed the tree from his property.
