New nautical-themed restaurant brings yacht vibes to the Starrett-Lehigh rooftop

A new nautical-themed restaurant will open this week atop Chelsea’s landmarked Starrett-Lehigh Building. Operated by Crew, the team behind popular boat bars Grand Banks and Pilot, the Yacht Club opens this Thursday, taking up a sprawling 20,000 square feet across two floors at the former 1930s freight terminal. The 125-seat restaurant will offer top-tier seafood, indoor and outdoor dining, and panoramic views from its sunny roof deck. The Yacht Club is part of the building’s new Level Ten complex, a full-floor suite of cutting-edge amenities, many of which are open to the public.

A retro diner opens under the High Line

The Standard, High Line has turned its plaza into an open-air retro diner for the summer. As the latest seasonal pop-up at the Meatpacking District hotel, The Soda Shop will serve up a nostalgic experience, with an Americana-inspired design and a menu that includes diner classics, like flapjacks, tuna melts, and soda floats, as well as fun cocktails, like a frozen dirty Shirley and pickle martini.

The Hudson Yards outpost of Italian marketplace Eataly has officially opened its doors. Located on the fourth level of the Shops & Restaurants at 20 Hudson Yards, Eataly Caffè marks the brand’s fourth New York City location and introduces a new concept featuring a coffee counter, grab-and-go options, and quick-service items ranging from pastries and sandwiches to gelato. The 5,500-square-foot, 82-seat space also includes a location-exclusive wine bar offering a variety of Italian wines, cocktails, and shareable plates.

First look at the food hall opening at NYC’s Lord & Taylor building

New York City's landmarked Lord & Taylor building will be publicly accessible for the first time since the flagship department store closed in 2019. A 35,000-square-foot food hall, dubbed Shaver Hall, will open later this year on the ground floor of the historic Fifth Avenue building. Amazon bought the property in 2020 and converted the space into offices in 2023. Newly released renderings are showing off the food hall's 11 curated stalls, wine and cheese bar, and "modern bodega."

Upscale sushi restaurant to open inside the Wegmans on Astor Place

An upscale sushi restaurant is opening inside the East Village Wegmans. On April 30, the supermarket will debut Next Door, a restaurant with a "fresh take on contemporary Japanese cuisine" inside the Astor Place store. Designed in a warm and inviting Art Deco-inspired style, Next Door will offer a main dining room, a champagne bar, and a sushi counter, where diners can enjoy fish sourced by Wegmans directly from Tokyo, an extensive raw bar, and small plates and entrees from the robata grill.

New York to issue liquor licenses to outdoor dining restaurants amid delays

New Yorkers no longer have to dread a boozeless outdoor dining experience this season. Gov. Kathy Hochul on Thursday announced that the State Liquor Authority (SLA) will now accept conditional approvals issued by the Department of Transportation (DOT) to restaurants participating in the city's Dining Out NYC program, allowing them to serve alcohol in their outdoor dining areas while their applications are being reviewed. The processing of liquor license applications has been significantly delayed, with only seven out of roughly 3,000 applicants receiving approval as of Saturday.

NYC’s outdoor dining season kicks off

The sun is finally out, and the tables are, too—outdoor dining is officially back in New York City. Mayor Eric Adams on Tuesday announced the start of Dining Out NYC, a program allowing certain restaurants to offer outdoor seating on streets and sidewalks across the five boroughs from April 1 through November 29. At the program's peak during the pandemic, more than 12,500 restaurants participated. As of Tuesday, just 2,450 outdoor dining setups, including 600 on the street, have been approved by the city, although more are expected to open in the coming weeks.

Bryant Park Grill sues to stop Jean-Georges takeover

The owner of Bryant Park Grill is taking legal action to stop the 30-year-old restaurant from being replaced by a new Jean-Georges Vongerichten venture. Michael Weinstein's Ark Restaurants Corp on Monday filed a lawsuit against Bryant Park Corporation (BPC), alleging the bidding process was neither publicly advertised nor transparent and was "unfairly steered" toward the Seaport Entertainment Group, the winning bid. The lawsuit also claims BPC ignored the grill's "right of first lease" and rejected its bid of $1 million more in annual rent than offered by Seaport.

Asian food hall to open in Long Island City this spring

A new food hall showcasing the best of Asian cuisine is set to open in Long Island City this May. Dubbed the LIC Food Hall, the culinary experience will debut inside the Star Tower condo building at 27-17 42nd Road, as first reported by LIC Post. Featuring 10 established and emerging vendors, the hall will offer a mix of dine-in and takeout options, serving up Chinese, Vietnamese, Taiwanese, and Japanese specialties.

Israeli celebrity chef Eyal Shani will open new restaurant at Williamsburg development

A residential development in South Williamsburg is adding a restaurant from a celebrity chef. Israeli chef Eyal Shani and Good People Group will open a new restaurant concept at Williamsburg Wharf, a project with five new residential towers and a public park currently under construction on the waterfront. Developer Naftali Group announced on Monday that the new eatery will occupy 4,000 square feet of ground-floor space along Kent Avenue.

Time Out to open new food hall in Union Square this fall

Time Out is opening its second food hall in New York City this fall. Set to occupy the ground floor of Union Square's Zero Irving tech hub, the 10,000-square-foot Time Out Market will feature a curated selection of the city's premier culinary and cultural experiences. The 300-seat space will include seven kitchens, a fully stocked bar, an outdoor terrace, and a stage for live performances by local artists, according to Time Out.

New York City's only revolving restaurant is spinning again. The View, on the 47th and 48th floors of the New York Marriott Marquis in Times Square, reopened this week following a revamp by Danny Meyer's Union Square Hospitality Group (USHG) and David Rockwell's Rockwell Group. Formerly host to an all-you-can-eat buffet, the two-story restaurant has been reimagined as an upscale dining destination inspired by "American supper clubs and chop houses of earlier eras."

Island Oyster opened its doors in 2017 and became a summer destination for seafood, island-inspired cocktails, and stunning skyline views. This week the Trust for Governors Island issued a request for proposals seeking a new seasonal food and beverage operator for the 32,000-square-foot waterfront site starting in 2026. The James Beard award-nominated Island Oyster will operate one final season before ending its run on October 31, 2025.

Planet Hollywood returns to NYC with 360-degree video screens instead of movie memorabilia

Planet Hollywood, the iconic movie-themed restaurant chain that launched in the 1990s and closed during the pandemic, reopened in Times Square following a $20 million transformation. The new iteration of the restaurant won't be a total 90s throwback, with the walls and ceilings covered in high-definition screens that will transport diners to "thematic worlds" to make "every meal an epic journey." The reopening marks a fresh chapter for Planet Hollywood and the restaurant will replace its signature movie memorabilia-filled interior with over 692 video tiles showing interactive videos.

After 30 years in business, the Bryant Park Grill is set to close and be replaced by a new Jean-Georges Vongerichten venture. As first reported by Crain's New York, the iconic 1,000-seat restaurant, which sits behind the New York Public Library and generates nearly $30 million in sales annually, will not have its lease renewed by the Bryant Park Corporation when it expires in May. Bryant Park officials said the restaurant had become "tired" and that it was time for a fresh start with a new operator.

The Dead Rabbit to debut new sports bar pop-up at Rooftop at Pier 17 this week

The Dead Rabbit, one of New York City's most iconic Irish pubs, is kicking off the new year with an all-new concept in the South Street Seaport. Starting January 10, the celebrated bar will transform the Rooftop at Pier 17 into "Joxer's," a winter sports bar concept that combines the Dead Rabbit's Irish charm with a unique menu, striking decor, private dining cottages, bungalows, a full-service bar, and access to the rooftop's ice skating rink. The pop-up will run seven days a week through early March before transitioning into the pub's "Paddy's Not Patty's" St. Patrick's Day concept.
