300 affordable apartments available in Hunts Point, from $465/month

A former juvenile jail in the Bronx that is being transformed into a mixed-use development opened a housing lottery last week for 303 low-income apartments. Phase two of The Peninsula, located at 1221 and 1225 Spofford Avenue in Hunts Point, brings deeply affordable homes to the site of the former Spofford Juvenile Detention Center, which closed in 2011 following reports of abuse and poor conditions. The development is also getting New York City's first city-owned grocery store. Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced on Monday that a 20,000-square-foot supermarket will open next year as one of five city-owned grocery stores opening in every borough. New Yorkers earning 30, 40, 50, 60, and 70 percent of the area median income can apply for the units, priced from $465/month studios to $2,936/month three-bedrooms.

Second phase begins on affordable housing complex at former Bronx juvenile jail

The five-acre mixed-use development at a former juvenile jail site in the Bronx is moving forward. New York City officials on Wednesday broke ground on the second phase of the Peninsula, which will bring over 700 affordable homes and a manufacturing building to Hunts Point. The project's second phase includes two buildings with 359 apartments, a public plaza, a parking garage, and community space. The mixed-use complex is rising on the site of the former Spofford Juvenile Detention Center, which closed in 2011 and was notorious for its mistreatment of children.

New York City’s first net-zero energy library opens on Staten Island

The New York Public Library on Wednesday opened its 14th branch on Staten Island and the first net-zero energy library in New York City. Located in the Bricktown Commons shopping center on the South Shore in Charleston, the $17 million, 10,000-square-foot building was designed by Ikon 5 Architects to be energy efficient, with solar panels providing nearly 100 percent of the energy the building will use. Managed by the city's Economic Development Corporation with the Gilbane Building Company, the new branch offers patrons a variety of amenities, including dedicated spaces for adults, teens, and children and flexible multi-purpose rooms for programs and classes.
