East Village ‘Peace House’ asks $6.95M

Known as “The Peace House” for its iconic inscribed façade, the four-story, three-family home at 166 Avenue A was the longtime family home and studio of late artist Anton van Dalen. This unique property sits just north of Tompkins Square Park in one of Manhattan’s most culturally vibrant neighborhoods. The brick building currently consists of three apartments, each with a distinct configuration. Asking $6,950,000, the home offers light from three exposures and views over the neighborhood’s gardens, in addition to the chance to live in what has long been an artistic and activist hub in downtown New York City.
As the New York Times reports, van Dalen, who purchased the home with another family in 1972, turned the home into a work of art in the 1990s, when he painted its now-famous inscription above the ground-floor entryway in response to the Persian Gulf War. The main duplex was used as van Dalen’s studio, but could easily be converted into three more bedrooms.
Filled with light and interesting architectural details, the lower level of the duplex consists of a loft-like great room and kitchen that opens onto a large rear terrace. The second level features vaulted ceilings and multiple skylights.
Up one flight is a full-floor loft, used by glass artist Bill Schneider. The space is framed by 11 windows, riveted steel beams, and exposed brick. This floor can be maintained in its current loft layout or modified to include as many as three bedrooms. Accessed via a staircase, the building’s roof offers views over the surrounding village.
The garden level is lined with windows. Within are multiple communal spaces as well as three bedrooms and a large lower cellar level.
