Less than two months after hitting the market for $6.25 million, Uma Thurman has sold her Gramercy Park duplex at 1 Lexington Avenue, reports the Observer. The actress moved into the co-op more than 15 years ago when she was still married to Ethan Hawke. They sold their unit after divorcing, but Thurman then bought this five-bedroom spread for $2.65 million in 2006, and spent five years renovating it into the classically elegant residence we see today.
The duplex is quite large at 2,800 square feet and features a mix of pre-war details and mid-century modern design elements. An entry gallery leads to the open living space that’s highlighted by a wood-burning fireplace. Pocket doors lead into the library, which then leads into a quiet sitting room. Throughout are 10-foot ceilings and oak herringbone floors.
Off the other side of the living room is the formal dining room that has French doors opening to a terrace overlooking Gramercy Park. The open kitchen is next and features a marble and live-edge black walnut entertaining island, walnut countertops, Miele and Bosch appliances, original tin ceilings and a custom fleur-de-lis tiled hood.
The master suite, as well as one more bedroom, are also on the main level.
Upstairs are three more bedrooms, including a second master suite, which boasts horsehair upholstered walls and an amazing bathroom/spa modeled after a Turkish bath. It has a steam shower, arched tiled ceiling, soaking tub, and marble slab sitting area.
Though Thurman told the Times that the apartment “was such a cozy place–it really was home for us,” she bought a $10 million co-op in the venerable River House at 435 East 52nd Street in 2013 (she actually purchased it from romance author Barbara Taylor Bradford) where she now resides. Of the sale she said, “my past will be somebody else’s future.”
