Manhattan-based firm Andrew Franz Architect has done an impressive transformation at this Manhattan apartment, in which three run-of-the-mill condos were reconfigured into this stunning single pad. Although the three apartments were oddly-shaped units, the architects had the benefit of two large adjacent terraces. The final result is a seamless connection between the interior and the expansive outdoor space–what Designboom refers to as “an eco-minded urban refuge.”

The six-person family who lived in the duplex wanted the renovation to focus on green living. So inside there are many plantings as well as organic, handcrafted features like the large walnut staircase which connects the living and entertainment spaces to the bedrooms on the top floor. To celebrate the family’s South Asian and American background, the design also integrated materials like salvaged walnut slabs, silk wallpaper, onyx, leather and bronze.

The 2,800-square-foot green roof garden is accessed through new custom retractable glass walls. The terrace has been outfitted with a bluestone floor, multiple seating areas, lawn, outdoor kitchen and small herb and vegetable garden. To even further blur the boundary between interior and exterior, views from the apartment merge with Central Park’s trees in one direction, and the Hudson River in the other.

From the backyard you also get a stunning view of the design on both floors of the apartment, especially the wood ceiling. This is a green oasis in the middle of the city if we’ve ever seen one.

Andrew Franz is no stranger to orchestrating stunning apartment transformations and is known for a seamless integration of outdoor and structural elements.
