John Steinbeck’s waterfront cottage in Sag Harbor where he penned his final novel, The Winter of Discontent, is on the market for $17.9 million. The Pulitzer Prize-winning author bought the Hamptons home, tucked away on a bluff between two coves, in 1955, as the New York Times first reported. The property sits on nearly two acres and contains a two-bedroom main residence, a gazebo-like structure that Steinbeck used as a writing space, a guest cottage, and a 60-foot private dock.

On the 34th floor at the Tower East on 72nd and 3rd Avenue is the former home of Nobel Laureate John Steinbeck. “The Grapes of Wrath” and “Of Mice and Men” author lived here with his third wife, Elaine Anderson Steinbeck, until his death in 1968. She stayed in the apartment until her death in 2003, after which time it was completely renovated with new windows, floors, plumbing, electric and an expanded entrance with the addition of an adjacent three-bedroom apartment. But the new owners left a few nods to the literary great, including keeping his study intact, complete with his original wooden desk, notes on the wall, and posters, according to the Post.

55 Woods Road, Snedens Landing, Palisades NY, House in the Woods, Orson Welles, John Steinbeck

This Medieval Tudor-style cottage in Palisades, NY had a pretty impressive roster of residents in the 1940s, including Orson Welles (he lived here while working on “Citizen Kane”), John Steinbeck, Sir Laurence Olivier, and Vivian Leigh. Perhaps this celebrity cache is what helped the $2.25 million Hudson River-front home attract a buyer, as the Post reports today that it’s gone into contract.

Known as “House in the Woods,” the three-bedroom stone cottage sits on a bluff overlooking the river, encompassing 2.4 acres of land. It’s located in the upscale hamlet of Sneden Landing, where Angelina Jolie’s mid-century modern childhood home is currently for sale and other past and presents residents include Mikhail Baryshnikov, Al Pacino, Lorraine Bracco, Bill Murray, and Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke. But name dropping aside, the 2,245-square-foot home is truly charming with open hearths, pitched beamed ceilings, original wood floors, and a stone back house.
