Jendretzki Design wants to transform Rat Island into an off-grid eco hotel

Eight years ago, then 71-year-old Alex Schibli bought an entire NYC island for $160,000. If you've never heard of Rat Island, it's a 2.5-acre land mass off the coast of City Island in the Bronx, where Schibli and his wife live. Originally, he said he had no plans to alter it, but a few months ago, he received a phone call from architect Pablo Jendretzki. "I read an article on him and the island a few months ago and called him to offer to design a project. We met the next morning," Jendretzki told 6sqft. Schibli had expressed a desire to build a self-sustaining hotel that takes advantage of the island's natural surroundings. In response, Jendretzki designed this series of off-grid eco pods that would function as a sort of glamping experience.

Jendretzki’s Spectacular Soho ‘Bubble Loft’ Available for Short-Term Rental at $40K/Month

When we wrote last year about the “out of this world” design of the 6,000-square-foot loft located at 145 Sixth Avenue in Soho, we had no idea the owners would decide to share their incredible home for a few months, offering the lucky renter a one-of-a-kind June-through-October experience in the city. In addition to the sure-to-be-a-conversation-starter giant bubble structure housing two bedrooms in the southwest corner of the home, there are a myriad of design elements incorporated by the architectural firm Jendretzki that provide plenty to talk about.

Jendretzki-Designed Greenwich Village Rental Offers Spa-Like Sanctuary for $25K/Month

A few short years ago this charming home at 530 LaGuardia Place was the epitome of an old school artist’s loft and on the market for $2.7 million. The wide-open space with soaring ceilings and hardwood floors was punctuated by original columns, an abundance of natural light, and the requisite exposed brick. Scattered among the apartment’s classic details and integral to the home’s design theme were trappings of the prior inhabitants, two artists who had lived and worked in the home for 40 years. In-progress paintings, canvases, work tables, and paint supplies all contributed to the home’s bohemian aesthetic. Fast-forward to 2015. While the traditional loft architectural elements all remain, this three-bedroom 3,300-square-foot Greenwich Village loft is nearly unrecognizable from its more understated predecessor, the result of an impeccable redesign by Pablo Jendretzki.

There’s No Place to Hide in This Former Printing Press Turned Soho Loft Home

We love how New York’s historical mashup of factories, businesses, places of worship, carriage houses, etc., means that modern living spaces often have unique and interesting former lives. This Soho loft originally housed a printing press, and JENDRETZKI Architects was given the enviable task of transforming its hard edges and wide-open floor plan into a contemporary and functional home—although those who desire lots of privacy may not be so keen on some of the views afforded within the interior.

SoHo’s Jendretzki Bubble Loft is Out of This World

When we say "out of this world," we don't just mean it's an amazing architectural feat — this apartment was actually modeled after Spaceship 1 through its technology and methodology. Also known as Luminal Gallery, the loft is the first dedicated video-art gallery in New York City. The 6,000-square-foot space was designed by architectural firm Jendretzki and features organic architecture meant to evoke the future, which is playfully juxtaposed against industrial loft details like cast-iron columns and exposed wood ceiling beams.
