The Coney Island Mermaid Parade turns 40, returns to the boardwalk this year

Even a pandemic can't sink the zany spirit of the Coney Island Mermaid Parade. The event, now in its 40th year, is the nation's biggest art parade and the largest annual event in Coney Island. After a two-year hiatus, the parade will return "fin-person" this year to welcome summer, co-presented by Coney Island USA and Coney Island Brewery, on Saturday, June 18, rain or shine.

NYC’s West Indian American Day, Mermaid Parades canceled over Covid

Two of New York City's most vibrant parades won't take place in person this summer for the second year in a row. Due to the spike in coronavirus cases, organizers of both the Mermaid Parade in Coney Island and the West Indian American Day Carnival along Brooklyn's Eastern Parkway have postponed their in-person parades until next year.

Coney Island nonprofit launches virtual face mask design contest

With the Mermaid Parade officially canceled, the Coney Island nonprofit behind the event is hoping to celebrate creativity in another way this year. Coney Island USA announced on Friday plans to host a "Put on a Funny Face Design Contest," described as the "world's first-ever mask design contest." The virtual contest is being presented by Spectrum News NY1 and will be judged by yet-to-be-announced celebrities of Coney Island.
