Artist Laurence Vallières Builds Giant Chimp from Up-cycled Cardboard

Armory week here in NYC takes place every March, and as always, this year's festivities brought forth many exiting projects all across the city. Participating in the action was Montreal-based artist Laurence Vallières who was featured in a special exhibition curated by 6sqft's resident expert in the New York art scene, Lori Zimmer (founder of Art Nerd New York) and Lynzy Blair for Joseph Gross Gallery. Vallières' work was featured at the Art on Paper Fair at Pier 36 where she constructed, from scratch, a grandiose chimpanzee made from scrap cardboard found on site.

Art Nerd New York’s Top Event Picks for the Week, 5/21-5/27

In a city where hundreds of interesting happenings occur each week, it can be hard to pick and choose your way to a fulfilling life. Art Nerd‘s philosophy is a combination of observation, participation, education and of course a party to create the ultimate well-rounded week. Jump ahead for Art Nerd founder Lori Zimmer’s top picks for 6sqft readers, beginning tonight! It's almost Memorial Day, which means your weekend is probably already chock full of picnics, barbecues and outdoor drinking activities. But in case it isn't, we've rounded up some arty- and some Memorial Day-themed activities to keep the long weekend packed full of fun. Cool off with some public art in Brooklyn Bridge Park, be the first to hop over to Governors Island this season, or see Tom Cruise on the deck of the Intrepid. You can also get outside of your borough comfort zone and head to Far Rockaway to celebrate surf and photography, hear from some women in downtown rock, or try out your best dance moves at a hip hop party sponsored by the Museum of the City of New York. Then round out the weekend with the serenity—and opulence—of Buddhist art from Kashmir. There, weekend sorted.

Art Nerd New York’s Top Event Picks for the Week, 5/14-5/20

The way-too-hecticness of an art fair week is upon us. If skipping around from Harlem to Randall's Island to the Lower Lower East Side isn't your jam, you can still get an art fix in the comfy confines of your usual spots. Rediscover Central Park with an art walk, or your old post office as it becomes a gallery. Check out architect-designed 3D-printed shoes while picking up new pumps, or discover a new street artist while checking out boutique jewelry. Whether you hit Frieze and the satellite fairs or not, there is an overabundance of art and design this week.

Art Nerd New York’s Top Event Picks for the Week, 4/16-4/22

This week, I suggest rediscovering Times Square, by participating in an incredible installation by Justin Bettman, and experiencing a screen-takeover with a short film by Peggy Ahwesh. Then observe and educate with a visit the Jewish Museum, or hit up Lincoln Center for a special art film program, an art exhibition that deconstructs notions of beauty, or an epic art fair catered toward photography. But if you're looking to shake it up and strike up a conversation with someone new, visit Salon Demimonde, a resurrection of the 17th century salons of the past where creatives and intellectuals can mix and mingle. You can also get your dance on at Aperture's Spring Party!
