The 34th annual Loisaida Festival makes a (virtual) return to the Lower East Side this month

In 1987, Avenue C was renamed Loisaida Avenue, "a Spanglish name for the Lower East Side, connoting the Puerto Rican and Latinx community which have had a significant presence there since the mid-20th century," explained Village Preservation executive director Andrew Berman. That same year on the Sunday before Memorial Day, the vibrant community hosted the first Loisaida Festival to celebrate their neighborhood's culture. Thirty-four years later, and the Festival is still going strong. For the second year, the event will be virtual on two Sundays--May 23 and 30--featuring an exciting roster of musicians, performers, and family-friendly entertainment.

The 101 units are available to those earning 40, 50, and 60 percent of the area median income and range from $724/month one-bedrooms to $1,546/month three-bedrooms.

Pre-register now for tickets to One Vanderbilt’s 1,000+ foot observation deck and glass skyboxes

This fall, you'll be able to ride an all-glass elevator up more than 1,000 feet to experience Summit One Vanderbilt, the Midtown tower's new observation deck that features two glass-floored overhangs. The attraction doesn't open until October 21, but you can pre-register on its website now for priority access to tickets. Also opening will be an outdoor bar, the highest urban outdoor alpine meadow in the world, and an immersive art installation.

Designed by renowned architect Toshiko Mori, the undertaking was the single largest renovation and restoration in the Central Library’s 80-year history. The modern, light-filled rooms now provide more accessible space for the public, which includes civic commons for community engagement (providing city and passport services), a "new and noteworthy" book gallery, and an enlarged and modernized business and career center.

NYC’s Open Streets program to be made permanent under new legislation

The popular program that closed streets to cars for pedestrian use will be made permanent under legislation passed by the New York City Council on Thursday. The "Open Streets" initiative first launched last spring as a way to make social distancing easier and to reduce crowds at parks during the height of the coronavirus pandemic in the city. The bill, sponsored by Council Member Carlina Rivera, would provide some funding and resources to the largely volunteer-led program while ensuring the open streets are fairly allocated among communities.

Construction officially kicked off this month at a new section of the Bushwick Inlet Park in Williamsburg. The long-awaited two-acre green space, dubbed 50 Kent, is scheduled to open in April 2022. Designs of the parkland, which was promised by the city as part of the 2005 rezoning of the Greenpoint and Williamsburg waterfront, were approved in 2018, but work stalled due to COVID-related budget cuts, as Brooklyn Paper reported.

A new rental building in the South Bronx is now accepting applications for 41 affordable studio apartments. The 12-story project at 972 Washington Avenue is located in the Morrisania neighborhood, about a mile east of Yankee Stadium. Qualifying New Yorkers earning 60 percent of the area median income, between $31,406 and $50,160 annually for a one-person household and between $31,406 and $57,300 annually for a two-person household, can apply for the $843/month apartments.

See what a renovated Penn Station could look like

A dark and cramped Penn Station could soon be replaced with a light-filled transit hub with more space for commuters. Gov. Andrew Cuomo unveiled on Wednesday two possible options for the reconstruction of the Midtown train station as part of his broader Empire Station Complex project, which would unify an upgraded Penn Station and the new Moynihan Train Hall. The interconnected station would increase train capacity at the site, which is considered the busiest in the country. It could serve 830,000 daily passengers by 2038, up from 600,000 the station served each day before the pandemic.

Several organizations and community groups are hosting cleanup sessions at parks across the five boroughs this week, allowing city residents to nurture their green thumbs, enjoy the springtime weather, and connect with nature. "There is no single greater resource than the natural world around us," Mitchell J. Silver, NYC Parks Commissioner, said in a press release. "The Earth offers us so much; it is our home and it is imperative that we work to protect, beautify, and preserve it." Ahead, find an Earth Day event happening in your neighborhood.

Affordable housing lottery opens for 79 units on the Upper West Side, from $456/month

In the Manhattan Valley section of the Upper West Side, an affordable housing lottery has just launched for New Yorkers earning 30 or 60 percent of the area median income. The units range from $456/month one-bedrooms to $1,510/month three-bedrooms. The building, known as WSFSSH at West 108, is located at 145 West 108th Street, and it's the first in a two-phase project from the West Side Federation For Senior and Supportive Housing (WSFSSH). When the development was first announced in 2016, it was contested by local residents for the fact that it would replace affordable, city-owned parking garages and a transitional shelter.

The seven-story building, located at 2724 Heath Avenue in the University Heights neighborhood, provides residents with a shared laundry room, gym, and fitness center. New Yorkers earning 120 percent of the area median income (AMI), or between $56,572 and $154,680 annually, can apply for the available units, which include $1,650/month studios, $1,750/month one-bedrooms, and $2,000/month two-bedrooms.

As was first reported by I Love the Upper West Side, the announcement comes as the famous sweet shop's Upper West Side location has seen a surge in customer traffic. The new location will be at 1784 Broadway, between 58th and 59th Streets, and, unlike the other NYC locations, will offer self-serve refrigerators with pre-packaged favorites like banana pudding and cupcakes, as well as a partnership with Australian coffee cafe Bluestone Lane.
