New Views Inside and Out of Renzo Piano’s First New York Residential Building

March 17, 2016

In January, 6sqft unveiled a set of illustrations and drawings detailing the exterior of Renzo Piano’s forthcoming condominium tower 565 Broome Street (formerly known as 555 Broome). Now, with construction finally underway, the investors at Cindat Capital Management have published an online gallery providing a better taste of what’s to come.

Pitched between two of the city’s most coveted neighborhoods, Soho and Tribeca, the much-anticipated development will rise nearly 320 feet in height along a full Varick Street block front between Broome and Watts Streets. The 25-story structure is being propelled forward by a joint venture among Bizzi & Partners Development, Michael Shvo and Itzhaki Acquisitions. Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano was tapped as the design architect, while the local talents at SLCE are serving as the architects of record.

The ground level will host a cobblestoned porte-cochère that adjoins a curving cable net glass wall and a vegetated wall.

The lobby features high ceilings, wood-paneled walls, and built-in bookshelves conveying a sense of comfort and tranquility to residents.

The Broome Street corner will be anchored by a dual-level retail space.

A gymnasium and storage rooms will be located in the cellar, an automated parking garage on the third floor, an exercise room on the fifth floor, and an outdoor swimming pool and amenity spaces on the seventh.

The 115 residences will be distributed between floors five to 25. According to the renderings published on Cindat’s page, kitchens will be finished in custom wood cabinetry, bathrooms will be sheathed in marble, and the floor-to-ceiling windows throughout will offer grand views of the cityscape and Hudson River.

I hope they just go with name “565 Broome Street.” This site is in Hudson Square, not SoHo. I guess it would be consistent with the idiocy of “Trump SoHo” a block north, so why not just go with “SoHo Tower.”

It will clearly help with marketing to foreign buyers, there’s no doubt about it. I think there’s nothing wrong with Hudson Square, and with the recent residential rezoning, it will become a more known neighborhood with time. The developer is condemning the location right from the start by erroneously dubbing the project.

They aren’t fooling anyone who knows a thing about the city. The place is dope, and they should own the location, not try to spin it. The product will speak for itself.
